Title: Shimano Scorpion Antares
Post by: LgMouthGambler on May 05, 2017, 06:48:43 PM
Got this in the mail today. I know, I know, another dang reel. Lol. This was a helluva good deal for a reel that is in really good condition. No box or papers, but I dont care. This reel is gonna get stripped down and new gears are gonna be added, as well as a few other things. This reel is gonna be used, and not just put on the shelf. This thing is killer smooth, and is a top notch reel by Shimano, even in todays standards. I will keep posting on the tear down so you can see how its all gonna come together. Here are some pictures of the reel.

That is my desired cranking reel. Haven't made it up to that yet. I will be following this intently.

Took the Antares down tonight to get it ready for cleaning and new parts. Come to find that I'm pretty sure this reel has never been opened up.

First, you have to remove two screws from the backside of the handle.

Then the nut, star, drag nut and springs.

Open the sideplate to remove the spool.

This will reveal the sideplate screws. Well, 3 of them. Lol.

You have to remove the final sideplate screw after you remove the palm plate pivot/hold assembly. First, pop the c clip off that's in front of the washer.

This will show you the order of things on the palm plate slide.

This will now reveal the last screw for the sideplate.

That you get through this little hole in the frame. Lol.

Sideplate screws out shown here.

You then unscrew these 2 screws by the line guide, as well as one on the palm plate side in the rear to remove the hood to get the sideplate off.

With the hood off, you can then remove the sideplate.

Remove the drive shaft and gears.

Then you can remove the clutch assembly.

Pop the c clip to start removing the thumb bar assembly.

Slide the bottom bar out after removing the slide plate, c clip, and washer. (shown in pic just above frame).

This shows the thumb bar components.

Then you can remove the pawl cap.

To remove the worm shaft you have to remove the c clip and washer.

Slide the worm shaft out (as you can see is bearing supported in this reel).

Then you can remove all the levelwind components.

And there is the full breakdown.

With the weight of the reel, it will help to balance the rod.

I have been tossing this thing around for a few days. I have to say, being that its a little bigger than most my reels, its in no way uncomfortable for me to fish. In fact, being all metal construction its not over bearingly heavy. It makes the reel very solid feeling, similar to my TD Zillion reels. Im gonna try and hook up with some fish this weekend. Need to give this and the Conquest a workout.

I bought the same reel on Ebay and loved it until, after catching a few bass, the reel malfunctioned.  The handle was hard to turn and actually spun backwards.  Looking at your post, I felt like I could tear mine down and fix what seemed broken.  I was wrong... I have cleaned and replaced the drag washers, springs and drag bearing but no luck.  I still have the same problem.  I lubed some of the internals with Penn reel grease and put a small amount on the washers.  Is this my problem?  Any suggestions?  ~b~

If your handle is turning backwards, your anti reverse bearing is shot.

Post by: JForeback on August 13, 2017, 07:45:50 PM
I replaced the Roller Clutch Bearing with part number BNT2925.  Is this the right replacement part? When I put the sleeve inside the bearing and try to turn it backwards as seen in the picture it does not turn (works correctly.)  Is there something I should be aware of when putting it all back together?  I think it might have had a little oil on it the first time.  I am going to clean up and reassemble and see if I get better results.  Any input would be appreciated so I can hurry and be back to  ~gf.

It makes the sound whenever the handle is turned. And it just sounds like a bearing is broken or something of that sort.

There is a bearing that is next to the AR bearing that may need replacement, or the pinion bearing may need replacing. I have both in stock.
