There is a lock and low water dam above St. Louis on the Mississippi River. They can be fished from the Illinois side by bank anglers. You can reach them driving through Granite City,Ill.. White bass, cats, carp, buffalo and drum are the primary species. There is another species which lives there---Stripers. Not the smaller white bass but full sized STRIPERS. They live just above the lock on the Illinois side and also near the low water dam during the summer. Very few know they are there. When I was a young boy, we would visit the lock in the evening because there was always a cool breeze from the river. One evening, the Illinois fish and game folks did a survey of the river just above the lock. My dad and I watched to see if there were any big fish in their nets. They pulled up a net full of huge stripers. We had never seen one before and asked if we could have a couple for supper. They have us the 2 biggest fish for home. They fed our family for a couple of days. From then till I moved from the area, I would go there and cast a large spoon for stripers. The heat of summer is best because the river is low and they use the deep pools near the lock. The low water dam is located a half mile up stream. The stripers hang in the pool created by the dam. Bring some bait with you and catch the other species as well.

Thanks for sharing this great information with us Wizard and if I lived closer to that area I would for sure have to check it out. Them big stripers are a blast heck even them little ones will give you a good fight.
