Title: Your favorite combos.. how would you do it?
Post by: HunterFB on February 19, 2012, 10:55:35 PM
So I have the following baitcasters....not included are my 6 spinning combos...
G Loomis NRX MH / Curado for worms and jigs
G Loomis IMX MH / Curado for frogs
St Croix Primier / Citica for spinnerbaits (topwaters and also Senkos)
Okuma Reflexion / Revo Primier for crankbaits

Would you set them up different?  Just trying to wrap my head around the topwater and senkos having to get traded out.  Maybe i should put them on my spinning rods???

Man, u got some nice gear. Everything looks good to me, I do use spinning gear for senko's but that's just for skipping them way under docks.

I will have to set one up for that.  It can be a terrible birdsnest if you misjudge the skip with a baitcaster.  I have had to completely respool once or twice in the past because of that.  Might be a good choice for a rod with an extra fast tip.  Tubes and senkos up under the docks might be easier with a short rod- I do have an ugly stick 6 footer that is medium action and it has not really been dedicated to any application yet.  Sounds like you found a purpose for that one!!  Thanks for the input.  Much appreciated. :-*

Are you wanting advice on how to set what you listed up or just wanting advice on our setups and why we do it that way? I just want to make sure not to over run your post :-\

It would be hard to give advice about your current setups without a little more detailed information.  You are missing parts of key information, such as length, power, and action.  You also did not give the gear ratio of the reels that you listed.

All this information together would give a much better picture of how you have your equipment setup.

Sorry, I wasn't really clear on the question.  My combos are slowly evolving as I gain more equipment, and I have currently 5 casting reels and rods.  I have (for bass) 3 set ups on spinning combos. They are:

G Looomis NRX 7'1" H with Shimano Curado 7:1 w/ 15# flouro: pitching/flipping
G Loomis IMX 6'8" (customized length from a 7'1") MH with Revo SX 6.4:1 w/ 30# PowerPro braid: frogs
St Croix Premer 6'6" MH with Shimano Curado 7:1 w/ 30# PowerPro braid: senkos; swimbaits
UglyStick 6'6" MH with Revo S 6.4:1 w/ 15# PLine Mono: topwater hardbaits
Okuma Reflexion 6'6" MH with Shimano Citica (I think it is a 6.4 or 7:1 older version) with 15# floro: crankbaits / spinnerbaits

I have 2 MH (Abu Garcia, Shimano) and 1 M Lightning Rod (all 6'6") action spinning rods I can use for spinnerbaits and finesse and the reels are a Pfleuger Supreme 2500 with 30# PowerPro, and 2 Abu Garcia 101 reels the same size w/ 8lb flourocarbon.  Really nothing dedicated full time to BOTH crankbaits and spinnerbaits.  THAT is what is confusing me, I think.

How would you suggest I change the configurations (if at all)?  How are your combos set up for technique specific applications?

Much better information, but you are still missing the action for each rod.  I know it sounds a little nit picky, but it is such an important piece of information, that I could make no suggestions without that info.

you say your using the okuma reflexion for cranks right. what type of cranking are you wanting to do. shallow, medium, or deep,

rod action is good for medium to deep
reel is good for shallow to medium
and line is good for medium to deep (i dont like floro for shallow cranks)
but over all you look good

I really only crank in about 2- 12 foot of water mostly.  I never have been much for deep water cranking.  I mostly throw crankbaits that dive to 8 foot or less.  Mostly Strike King 1.5s, Square billed Bandits 4-8ft divers and suspending Rouges and Excaliburs.

the only reason i dont like flouro for shallow crank is the sinking line can make a 3-5 ft diver (like the 1.5) run 4-6 which can be good at times but if i need to keep it in that 3' range the i have to change rod position which for some reason messes with my hookset lo i know im wierd but thats my preference.

So mono for the shallow cranks would be better than fluorocarbon is what you'd say?  I see the reasoning.

thats what i like. also for the stretch so i dont rip them out of there mouths. if i was gonna use a low stretch line i make sure i have a lighter action on the rod like a Medium light so i could still have te abrasion resistance but have a little bit of give. i have found that a lighter action rod almost seems to help them hook themseves. on depths of up to 6' i wont go over a medium action with 12lb mono or copoly
