ok...this is a real novice question but here goes: I fish ponds with 6" plastic worm on #2 or #3 worm hook.  I usually take an 8" worm and pich upper end off to shorten it, feed it on the hook so far and then run the barb through the lower portion to make it "weedless".

The fish pick it up and run with it...I try to keep a slack line while they are doing this so the fish won't feel any resistance.  However, when I set the hook usually nothing...

so, am I setting the hook too soon and if so how do you tell when the fish has picked up the line long enough?  It feel like they are just running with the tail of the worm and not taking up the hook.

do I need a smaller hook the 2-3?

or?   should I post a picture of my "worm rig"?

any suggestions would be appreciated

Actually, I would use a larger hook.  I generally fish a finesse worm on a 2/0 or a 3/0 hook, and use a 4/0 to a 5/0 hook on larger worms.

I would say a larger hook also. One thing to remember when setting the hook when they are running with it. If they are running to the right set to the left. If they are running to the left set to the right. If not you will rip it out of their mouths withing getting a good hook.

If the plastic is too hard, you may have to skin it thru, to get a good hook set.  Or it may be that you hook size is just too small the what is described above.

What type of hook and what brand are you using? I also would use a 4/0 or 5/0

Bluegill ?  I think 3/0 is plenty for a 6 inch worm, for me anyway. But I would skin it .

I agree loomisguy, I used to fish a lot of ponds and this sounds exactly like bluegill bites.  I used to use a 4.5" culprit with a 1/0 or 2/0 worm for my pond fishing with a lot of success.  One good indication is do you lose the tail on the worm at all?  If so, you have small fish picking up the tail and running with it.

Tight lines,
