Custom Frogs
« on: July 10, 2012, 02:02:50 PM »

Lately, I have seen the Frog blogs blow up like they were hit by a 9 lb mossback.
I would like to start a thread about how you customize your hollow body frogs.

How you level them in the water- some us solder wrapped around the hooks,
How do you get them to walk better- some trim the legs 1/2 inch and leave only 12 rubber strands..

How do you do it?

I will do some of mine and post photos.

Looking forward to reading the posts here.  The only thing I do is trim the legs a bit and bend the hooks out a shade.

It depends on the frog really.

I throw two colors primarily. A bluegill color that has a green/brown back and a white belly with a spot of orange on it. The other is a yellow headed black bird.

I like to added two 8mm glass rattles to the frog. The new ITT used by snag proof makes this virtually impossible, so I had to get a bit creative and do some surgery to the top of the frog to get those in. I'm still not certain that's the best way to go.

I also bend the hook out just slightly and trim one leg a bit smaller. One leg just a hair smaller will assist in the walking process.

For the white frog I draw a central line from the mouth to the end of it with squiggly lines ectending from that central line to the side at about a 30 degree angle. I truly believe in this and could never be persuaded otherwise after seeing the difference in strikes when fishes against one that was not doctored.

I don't do any color doctoring to the black/yellow frog.

In the past I've added some Gorilla Glue to the bottom of my frogs to give it a different texture - but that's because I'm a details junkie and I don't know if it really matters.

Since Amazon sent me two orders of two frogs by mistake I think I might to add a rattle in one of them along with trimming the legs a bit.

Ditto for me.  I also have a bottle of Mend-it on hand to do repairs.

Once my frogs get beat up, I'll color the bellies with permanent markers and try different things. I made a custom  cricket/black bottom booyah since they are all pale bellied

Black with red, but not cricket with black to my knowledge

I also like to take a sharpie and draw dots on the belly in balck and red.  Set them in the sink overnight and after you use them for a while, the spots fade and bleed outward in a smooth fade-out so they look real like a frog's spotted belly.  If I can find a brown sharpie, I will use that on my white bellies.

Interesting about the black stripe(s) on the belly mentioned earlier.

By the way, I still have photos to post, I haven't forgotten.  I will get those ASAP.

Anyone figured a way to replace the tassle legs?  I want to change some of mine out for other colors.  I think a green pumpkin with green flake jig skirt sticking out of a Spro Natural green frog would be lethal. Maybe even dip the tips of a few of the legs in chartreuse dip n glo to look like translucent toes.

I'm ALSO curious about being able to replace/change the "tassle legs".  Although I know some that fish them WITHOUT ANY LEGS (just the bodies), and do quite well!

I had a couple of the Dahlberg Diver Frogs.  You can't put them it with other plastics because the legs are made out of that elaztech material.  I had a pair of legs that needed replaced... so glued a couple of ribbon-tailed worms together (head-to-head) with Mend It and pulled them through the hollow body.  SEEMS to work OK...

But, still wondering about the "tassle", hollow bodied frogs...   :-\

Do anyone have any pictures of their Frankenfrogs? I too would like to change the legs. Also do you think it's possible to use jig skirts as tassles for the legs?
