Help me decide on a 10" C-rig worm
« on: July 03, 2012, 04:30:04 PM »

Going fishing next weekend to a very clear lake. Been hearing from the locals that a junebug 10" worm is the key C-rigging. I dont do much C-rigs, so wanted to know what you guys recommend. Im going to be placing a order with tacklewarehouse this friday. Help me decide!

Thanks

I've never C-rigged a worm that large.  Biggest I have done is a 7.5 ribbon tail.  Personally when I am tossing out a big ole' worm like that, I like to T-rig it on a 5/0 hook.  I would think the same would be true for a C-Rig, nice large hook.

I keep hearing about the jelly worms. Are they good? I see they have a 9" ribbontail and a 12". I may get a pack of each but see they have no junebug. Just plane colors. Hmmmm...

Zoom ol monster is my go to worm in the 10". Plenty of colors to choose from to. Good luck out there!

Thanks. I have a tournament on this lake. Its one of those never been there, but study the lake map kind of tournaments. Also doing as much research as I can. I was told its a deep very clear lake with alot of sunken bridges and structure. 2800 acres. Debating going deep abd throwing big worms and drop shot, or going shallow in the coves frogging in the muck. Maybe both.... errggg.... working on the game plan.

zoom ole monster and Gene Larew both make a great large worm. However to C rig with them wouldn't be my first choice. You'll need a big hook and then with the high salt content they will be on the bottom the whole time, you minus well just texas rig them.

Net bait and Culprit both make a larger worm that doesn't have salt and they will float a little better. The mann's jelly worm is great and has been a standard for more years than I've been bass fishing. Jelly worms have never come in a vast array of colors though. If your not set on June bug, they have colors that will work. If your C rigging pretty deep isn't as important as action. Once you get so deep, black is just as good as any other color unless you get it stuck in your head that you have to have such and such then your confidence flounders and you don't work the bait effectively.

Not saying it will work for you on that lake, but I have caught several fish throwing a 10 inch worm on a c-rig. 5/0 extra wide gap hook out in deep structure. Zoom, and yum both make good worms for this.

The Berkley Power Worm is tough to beat. It's a solid worm that comes in the right colors - I like the Blue Fleck.

I C-Rig 10" worms all the time in Florida waters.  My first choice is a Zoom Ole Monster with a 5/0 Gamakatsu worm hook.  There are times that a Berkley 10" Power Worm will also work, but you need to go to a 6/0 EWG hook with these worms as they are much thicker.  These are big fish baits so make sure you have a rod with enough backbone to set the hooks and handle the fish.

Zoom ole monsters in watermelon red / chartreuse for clear shallow water (less than 15 ft)

Zoom ole monsters or mag culprit (10") in junebug are good for deep water.  after about 18 feet though, as Mike said...the only colors that show are purples and blues.  everything else is grey as light does not reflect any other wavelength light (and show as a color) deeper than that really.  So, you could have a rainbow colored worm in 20 ft and the fish would see it as grey hues.  Like a rainbow, the colors go away as you get deeper...from yellow going first and as you get deeper, the purple is the only color left in its surface depth apperance.

Color doesn't matter as much as the worm being straight on the hook, and the weight being the same thickness of the worm.  (a 3/8 tungsten weight woulf look unnatural to a 6 inch finess worm, for example.)  For the 10 inch worm, a weight that cups the head of the worm in a flowing, smooth shilouette is good.  I use a 3/8, 1/2 oz weight depending on the wind/cover.  You CAN use a 1/4 oz when T rigging if you are fishing shallow, but it is pretty small compaired to the worm body.

If you are c-rigging, grab a few Net Bait Baby Mad Paca Craws in the watermelon red.  dip the long curly legs in Dip N Glow yellow (garlic scent).  it will turn the pieces you dip a super bright chartreuse that absolutely drives the fish nuts in clear water.  Use a size 3 trokar hook (EWG hook).  I would c rig this on a 1/2 oz tungsten bullet weight with a glass bead between the sinker and the swivel.  use a size 7 or 8 barrel swivel and leave a 2 foot to 3 foot leader.  I like a 2 foot for heavier cover and the longer for say, clay bottom lakes- the longer leader gives a more natural fall, but with the subtle summertime bites, you have more difficulty feeling them pick up the bait.  Mostly, this time of year, they will just pick up the bait and sit there.  You feel a "dink dink" like a crappie bite, and then it is mushy like you have weeds on the hook.  Not many BAM type hits on plastics right now.  It is so hot, they are not really chasing things far.  They want an easy meal. so fish it very very very slowly.  Draaaag the c rig to the side about 4 inches at a time and wait for 15 seconds...wind the slack while maintaining semi tension on the line to feel the bite.  repeat.  Good luck.  Oh, Magnum Zoom lizards in the same color go well with a size 4 trokar hook.  Also, lately, the thinner lines are getting more bites than the 20lb test.  My wife bested me on the last outing using 8lb test on t rig with that lizard and a 1/4 oz bullet not pegged.

Thanks for the info I will be trying some of this also. Most of my rods and rigged with 12-20lb mono and fluro. Can I still use that 12-20lb line on a crig but use 8lb flouro for the last 2-3 feet? Or should I respool the entire reel with 8?
