60 vs 75
« on: July 17, 2012, 09:51:27 PM »

I am planning a new boat purchase and my options are 60 or 75 Mercury ELPT 4 strokes. What am I going to see performance wise if I go with the 75 instead of the 60.  MPH's , fuel consumption and the power to tow my kids on a tube are the areas of concern.

A little bit more in all areas with the 75. Haha. I'd go with the 75 if you plan on towing someone.

Go big or stay at home as they say!!

Not sure of what is available for a 75, but you could look at a different prop for towing vs fishing.

Go do Mercury's website and you'll find they have several sets of test data for both motors. You should be able to find tests for both motors with the same or similar boats to get and idea of the performance difference. They also include fuel consumption data.

Is Mercury your only option?  When you step up to the 75 you going to the next larger engine family so your gaining weight. If Yamaha is an option take a loom at their 70 four stroke. Its still in the weight range of the Mervury 60.

I can get a Honda but never really considered it. I only learned of the Honda as an option this week when I spoke to the salesman. The dealer is 75 miles from me and the local marine dealers in my area doesn't service Hondas to the best of my knowledge. I want to be able to get service close to home and Mercury seems to be the smartest choice as far as ease of finding service.
I guess the bottom line is am I gonna gain enough from the 75 to warrrant the cost which I guesstimate to be $1500. Would the smarter decision be to go with the 60 and spend $1500 on electronics or upgrade to a galvanized trailer. I know everyone says to max out the HP but when you add the extra weight are you really gaining the benefit of the extra 15 HP?
The dealer that I am purchasing from also is the sponsor of the spring boat show in Columbia, SC. He informed me that Crestliner will be offering incentives at that time but we have to wait and see what they offer.

I was going to mention this when we last chatted but I just figured you were sold on the 60. I would go with the 75 optimax. 15 extra hp and being a two stroke I think will bring you better performance. the VT19 comes stock with the 90 but I'm glad I went with the 115. I'm sure the 60 will be fine, but are you, in a year or two, going to be kicking yourself for not going with the 75. the cost of running the engines will be practically the same.

I wonder if anyone has ever said, I really wish I had gotten the small motor.

Not only that but its the cheapest to go up when you buy a boat. You buy the 60, decide you wanted the 75, get out the sandpaper.
