Fishing across State lines
« on: August 09, 2012, 07:09:32 AM »

My place is in the Southern part of WNC and quite honestly, the better lakes to fish are just across the border in South Carolina.Since I'm registered in NC it seems overly complicated and expensive to dunk my boat in SC waters on a cases by case basis. How do you guys that regularly fish across lines and travel the tournament trail stay on top of the regulations? I have the non resident licenses, that's easy, but I don't want to deal with Game Wardens every time I head South because my boat has a NC sticker on the hull.So is there an easy way that I can get around this? any resources you can direct me to? I have Googled it to no result.Looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks

check the laws for both states, if your from NC, and launch on that side of the lake, you may only be required to have a NC license regardless of where you fish on the lake, again, check the laws in your area.

To be honest, it seems the Game wardens do not bother the bass boats that often.  Maybe it is just me, but I've fished in SC, NC, VA, MD, PA, DC, WV and NY all in the past 5 years and the only place I have ever been checked is my home state, MD, and DC.  It also seems like the only time I ever get checked in my home state is on a Holiday, 4th of July, Memorial Day, days like that.  I think for the most part the guys driving bass boats have all their paperwork in order, all the floatation devices, and are generally not drinking and carrying on.  It's the ski boats, party boats, etc that I always see getting stopped, most likely they are consuming beverages...   ~beer~ ~beer~  So just grab your non-resident license, pay the ramp fee and obey the no-wake zones and you should be good to go...   ~c~

As long as you have the current registration date on your hull you should not have an issue, you are only required to be registered in the state you reside. Also the fishing license thing gets squirlly, we have fished tournements on the ST. Marys' river and launched from the Florida side, we could fish both sides of river with a florida license only, however if we went up a channel or cut on the Georgia side we would need a non resident GA license.

This should be a non issue if you're holding the state's license that you are fishing. Take me, I live in Louisiana and my boat is registered in Louisiana but when I go to fish Texas lakes, or where every I may go, as long as I have paid for a non resident license for their state and my boat has a current registration for my home of record (where my drivers license is from) there is nothing illegal about it.

The Non Resident license are always higher and that's to get you for not paying any registration fees in that state.

OK guys , I appreciate the replies. Seems the only thing I need to be prepared for is the boat launch fee at the place I fish. Is it safe to say that if a lake in question has a fee, then there will be somebody at the ramp to collect it ?

Many of them have an honor system that you put money in and get a small display to put on your dash.
