New Cheap Reel?
« on: October 02, 2015, 08:45:40 PM »

So my cheap $11 Walmart reel just broke, again. First the handle unscrewed itself and broke. I replaced it. Today, during a cast something cracked, now the bale doesn't spring closed. I'd love to buy $100+ reel but I don't  have the cash. Anything that is of good quality, but cheap would be great. Around $10-30 would be ideal for now anyways.

Some times at BPS you can get a good spinning reel for around $30 when they have a sell going on.

I just checked and they have one on sell now a Browning Fishing Stalker Spinning Reel for $29.99 and several different models of it. I have a couple of the smaller ones and I use one on my  UL Ugly stick nice reels for not a lot of money.

Gander has a real nice "ganger" one for 30 bux. I believe it's a 5 bearing. I have it on one of my rods. I think it's an older pfleuger

Shimano makes the IX series, I think it is, runs about $15 or so.  I got mine on sale for $11.  Not a bad reel, I use it as a backup reel and it has lasted a while.  I asked about it on a saltwater site I post to, and it is pretty popular, people usually get a couple to few years out of one.

If you can still find them, Quantum Optix run about $20, and are good workhorse reels.  Their Q-Ray has held up pretty well for me also, I like that one, for a cheap reel, I'm pretty sure they are under $30.

I don't know what Mitchell's are going for now, because I haven't bought one in quite a while, but they had a couple of models under $30 that are fine fresh water reels.

How long have you owned the WalMart reel?  Is there a possibility they would tale it back and give you a new one?  If they would, you can save your money and buy a better reel.  Going from cheap reel to cheap reel doesn't improve you equipment, or your fishing experience.

I've  had it for 5 months although I didn't not fish everyday with it. I no longer have the receipt, which is only for 1 month. I would like nothing more than to get a great pricey reel, but I just can't afford it sadly.

Any one of the ones we suggested in your price range would be work great. I have two of the  Browning ones maybe an older model since I had them for over 5 years and use one of them on my 12' jigging pole and the other one on my 4 & 1/2 ' UL Ugly Stick for casting for Crappie. Let us knoow which one you go with and how you like it after you use it.

WOW  :shocking: that is a great deal 2 for  the price of one and they look like a great reel  ~c~ ~c~ Not sure about what the model numbers mean but I guess the higher the model number the more line you can put on it and the more barrings it has in them.

sadly it is only the line capacity that changes, not ball bearings.

Update! Just bought new reels for myself and my Dad. I bought the Daiwa mentioned previously for 14.99 and my Dad bought the Shimano IX4000R. We had seen that they had the Shimano IX4000RC, but only 4000R was available. Only 1 of each was instock.

I love the Daiwa reel! It works great for my PP 50#  braid!

However we're having trouble with my Dads reel and his PP 10# braid. It keeps getring knots. We've tried to stretch and respool the line without redoing the knot on the reel. Also the braid takes a while to grab onto the reel..

Well we read that you can also put electric tape, which we did. We also sinched our knot this time real well. It spooled on beautifully. We'll have to test it out tomorrow.

So the,Daiwa feels much sturdier and casts great. I love the handle design and knowing that it is made of metal is an ease. It's very smooth and holds on my PP 50# Braid very nicely. Oh i also love the drag sound it makes. I find it interesting. Ill report more with use. And thanks again guys for your feedback and advice. Happy fishing
