What to BUy
« on: July 06, 2017, 05:04:47 PM »

Hello everyone I am new to boating and new to this site.
I purchased an used Ranger 373V and I am trying to figure out what kind of trolling motor I should get that is appropriate for this model boat.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Either the Motorguide or Minn Kota are great motors.  All you need is a 24V motor with at least 80lb of thrust and you should be good to go.  Past that it becomes a matter of personal preference.  You have folks that swear by one brand or another .  I guess it is kind of a ford/chevy sort of thing.  Either way if you buy a new motor it is gonna hit your wallet hard.

You might want to upgrade to a larger tm, worth thinking about.

80 pounds is sufficient but there are times that you may want a bigger one. Since I started using a 109 I'll never go smaller but it requires three batteries.

I read somewhere recently that it's recommended to have 2 pounds per 100 of boat.

Good information right there. You also get all the new added bonus of figuring out cable vs electric steering. My neighbor has an electronic ultrex and prefers to fish the back of the boat while steering with a Bluetooth remote. Not my cup of tea but always a site to see.

Either brand Minn Kota or Motor Guide with 80lbs of thrust will be just fine.  The shaft link needs to be 45"inches at least.  I have both brands on my boats; Stratos = Minn Kota Fortrex 80lb foot controlled ; G3 14ft Alwed Jon Boat = Motor Guide 41lb thrust foot control on the bow.   I've not had any issues with either one.

If I had to do it over again with the G3 I'd get a 24volt system instead of the 12volt.  But I only fish small electric motor lakes only with it so it gets the job done for me.
