Going smallmouth fishing for the first time
« on: July 14, 2017, 03:07:03 PM »

Tomorrow a buddy and I are going smallmouth bass fishing fro the first time. Planning to head down to the Big Piney river, float 6-7 miles and see if we can get some brown fish! I am super excited as I have never caught a smallie before. Anyone have any tips?

Cortman I assume that you fish for largemouth. This fish tends to find cover as it's primary method of hunting prey. Not so for smallmouth. Find structure and look for deeper water. Humps if you can find them on your sonar will be a good place to start. Smaller baits fished in and around these physical features can bring some big girls. Gulps are useful as are other soft plastics fished vertically on 4/0 ewg hooks. Think vertical. Just a very short crash course but you don't have much time. Good luck out there!!

Thanks for the crash course flowerjohn. Really looking forward to this! It's a pretty small stream/river so we'll just be canoeing.

Small stream Smallies fish for just like you would for trout.

Eddies, next to logs, head and tail of pools, riffles. Have fun, they fight like no other!

X2 and fish topwaters and spinnerbaits, also a finesse jig or tube.

Trip report!

We got to the river around 8. We would have gone earlier but we had a local rental place drop us off upriver so we could float down to the truck, and they didn't want to open before 8. So a bit of a later start than we would have liked.
Paddled upriver about 150 yards to a deep pool and started fishing. I started by throwing a Rebel Pop-R around edges and laydowns. No takers. My buddy caught a small rock bass or goggle eye. We wound up catching several of these throughout the day and they were all almost identical in size.

Really beautiful little fish and they fought hard!
Shortly after the first rock bass I switched to a 1/8 oz. Siebert finesse jig in green pumpkin with a Damiki Rykoh craw in dark pumpkin, and threw it behind a boulder. Looked like the perfect finesse jig setup, and this smallmouth must have thought so too.  :)

My first ever smallmouth! Weighed in at 1.38 lbs, respectable for a stream smallie. I was super tickled. He fought hard!
We fished through the morning and afternoon and wound up with a total of 9 smallmouth, 4 rock bass, and 1 largemouth bass between us. All of mine were caught on that finesse jig, and my buddy caught a couple on a jointed Rapala crankbait as well.
It was a beautiful stream, a pleasant day, and a very successful and enjoyable trip! We will be doing that again!

Nice Trip Report.

I remember my first Smallie, I was Trout Fishing with a Medium light action Spinning Rod and using Worms & Maggots for bait. When it hit and I set the hook I thought I had hooked the biggest Trout of my life! Just kept fighting and then it jumped and I was like WTH? Finally got it in and saw what it was.

Always wanted to do a Float Trip for Trout on a couple of the creeks near me but never could get it together with drop off and pick up trucks. Really wish I would have while I was still there.

Congratulations on the smallies. Going to try my luck for them in either late August or sometime in September on Lake Champlain in Vermont. My son is a Fireman there and one of his co-workers is a guide. Can't wait.
