Lew's SS help
« on: August 06, 2017, 07:10:47 PM »

Nothing ever goes smoothly!!

The pawl on one of my Lew's started acting up and piling the line on one side of the spool.  When I called Lew's the guy I spoke to said replacing the worm gear and pawl was pretty simple and I have worked on a few reels before.  Everything went smoothly until I tried to pull the handle side apart.  I have all the screws out the handle and star drag off but when I go to pull it apart it will come about a quarter inch and hang.  Everything will turn a little around the threaded portion where the star drag fits but won't come loose.  I suspect I just need to put more pressure but Ive got myself in trouble forcing things.

I know we have plenty of reel mechanic on here and lots of Lew's fans so has anyone run into this or have an answer?

The screw that goes in the reel just under the foot (part that connects to the rod) also holds a tab in place. Get a paper clip and reach in through the screw hole and poke the tab out (from the inside so it pops out of the reel).

It binds on the drive gear.

That was it, worked fine.  I had a devil of a time with the teeny parts and my old hands though.  I finally got it back together and it seems to be good.  Thanks again.
