3Crows, No one place I guess. I bought my level wind through a vendor on ebay. I need a dual bearing idler next and I am going to check at hookless.com for this. I look for the best price, including shipping,I can get.

Ordered a few more parts for reels. Found a dual bearing levelwind for my 5500c,price was too good to pass up. Just completed order for two dual bearing idler gears and one 4600 dual bearing levelwind. I am nearly done with upgrade parts. I have a couple more heathen chinee reel handles coming as well. Next month I'll buy a dual bearing idler gear for the 5500c and call it done.

I've been more than a little frustrated with finding parts and the ourageous cost of some of them. I won't be unhappy to see this phase of things done. It's been nice to learn how to do things and I've enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment when things go well. I'll never collect reels though, repairing and upgrading them is a damn money-pit. ;)

Where is the best place to order these parts, idler gear etc., say for a old, 1973, 5500C?

Sometimes the same boat, cannot always afford the new stuff but do not mind spending on the old stuff, lol.

Thanks.

Jerry Foran at http://www.hookless.com/ has everything you'll need, and at a reasonable price.

There are no magic lures, and the fish don't care what you paid for your gear.

Upgraded my 5500c3 to a 5500c5. Next month I'll get a dual bearing gear for it. The dual bearing gears for the 4600's should be deliivered today.I'll probably fetch them from the mailbox tomorrow. :)

Installed the gears in my 4600's. I did some practice casting this morning on the lawn. The reel is very smooth, and I feel it's limitations now are defined by spool tension more than anything else. More practice and I should be able to loosen that tension and get better results.

As to what the upgrades accomplished I'd say I made maybe 10% increase in casting distance, probably a little less. I do think the reel feels a great deal smoother and there is likely a reduction of any possible "fatigue".
