you just have to let the bass tell you which the prefer.  it can change from one day to the next.

I agree its not a 100% yes or no. In the one lake I've been fishing lately where the water is the color of mud I can tell you pretty quick when a rattle gets broke. I quit getting bites period.

So I would say its totally situational.

Also keep in mind that hard baits, especially lipless cranks, have the sound vary among manufacturers. A Rattle-Trap has a different sound than a 1-knocker. The bass will tell you the sound they prefer.

One of the reasons I like the Tim Horton cranks that I have. You can turn the knock on and off. Having a selection of different rattle baits, Priceless.
