Can jigs catch small bass?

I sometimes hear people say that only big bass will hit a jig. Is this true? The reason that I ask, is a few of the ponds that I fish mainly have small bass in them (or at least I think so).

Bass of any size will hit a jig. I used to fish some small streams for SM bass, and scaled down with smaller size jigs because the majority of the fish were small, 15" or less. So, what you're hearing is simply not true, both because fish of various sizes will eat a bigger or smaller meal, and jigs are made in different sizes, so can imitate what they eat.

I think its just been twisted a little. It should have been, "jigs catch a lot of big bass." Jigs do produce some very large bass but there is nothing keeping small bass from eating the jig if he finds it first.

Absolutely. In fact you can buy some Strike King Bitsy Bugs. They are a finesse jig, and those smaller bass will eat them.
But you can still catch some good size bass with them too.

Also just because you might not have caught any big bass from that pond, does not mean there aren't any. They just might be harder to catch. More finicky, or smarter than the smaller bass.

Not just smaller bass.  Caught this sucker on a 3/8 Nutech with a speed craw trailer.  Not exactly a big jig though.

After catching a 4 incher on a 10 inch worm I'm not sure how to answer this with a straight face, jigs will catch bass of any size is all I know. lo lo

Caught lots of smaller bass on jigs. However I have started using mop jigs and I’ve noticed my small catch rate decrease. The mop jigs have such a large profile that I think smaller fish aren’t as interested, but I’ve caught some real good fish in them. If I know there’s good fish around I want to trigger those bites instead of catching the smaller bass that may be hanging near the larger one.

Canny, mop jigs are a great way to beef up your profile and trigger a larger bass that is laying around waiting for a bigger bite for lunch. I think that the bigger profile helps but sometimes it is all about hitting them on the head. Sometimes it just takes something a little bigger to hit the target.

I like the mop jigs a lot and use them when I have the chance. Mike is most usually punching and that means we are likely motor deep into something that a jig isn't going to work well in. I will say, that when they are working, they work really well!

yes.  other options to consider, if you're worried the jig/trailer might be too big for the fish you chase: 
strike king bitsy bug and/or
terminator finesse jigs

black with blue or brown trailer
brown with blue, blue-green, or green pumpkin trailer

options to consider.

I do actually have a bitsy bug that I can try. Good idea.

I just need to have a dedicated jig fishing trip, and stick with it.
