Quick trip to New water
« on: October 19, 2017, 10:27:48 PM »

Found a new tucked away set of sloughs and wetland ponds a few days ago, so got out this afternoon to check it out.
Very narrow and shallow. I was on the bank, and don't see any reason to bring my tube or a kayak here (can cast all the way across, no visible structure that was unreachable).
I had heard of people catching catfish here. Around here, that's a good indication there may be bass. Walked around slow rolling a 3.5" soft swimbait with underspin and BAM!

Yep, I'd say there's bass here! Just shy of 20" and as tubby as can be.
I also hooked in to something else I suspect was a carp. Felt twice as large and strong as that bass. Hook straightened and I never got to see it, but there was a scale twice the size of my thumbnail still on the hook.

Thanks for the report Jason and nice looking Bass. ~c~ ~c~ From the size of that scale I would think it was a Carp also.

Thanks All!
I think the scale is a good indication a foul hooked carp too. Just weird fishing a swimbait with the hook (basically weedless), I thought foul hooking something would be pretty unlikely. Oh well, stranger stuff has happened.
It'll be interesting to go back there next year when the bass get going again. Conditions were terrible yesterday. Cold, extremely windy. Woke up to snow this morning. Swim bait definitely not the perfect choice for numbers but I was trying to cover water and scout, get a feel for the environment like structure and depth.

Congrats Jason.  ~c~  It's always fun to fish new water and even more fun when it pays off and you catch some fish!   ;D

Funny, I never think of snow where you live.
