Its just about A-Rig Time
« on: October 22, 2017, 08:51:44 PM »

For the record let me state I have never used or plan to use the A-Rig.  I know many do and have lots of success but I just don't want to.  With that being said, How man here are devotees of this bait process.  Seems to me this time of year or a little later perhaps just about every boat you see at Lake Norman has an A Rig of some configuration tied on.

actually here in our area, the a-rig is better in the dead of the winter than any other time.  i don't throw it either, but winter is always when you hear of folks having success with it.

I tried one a couple a times. First time all I caught was a hand sized crappie. The second time I did a real nice lob cast, watched it launch flying through the air. I even remember my fishing partner saying that thing is flying. Yuppers it was, as it had broke my line and I watched that $20 sail into the depths never to be seen again.  ~xyz

I did however pick two Luck E Strike Umbrella Rigs for like $1.50 each at a Walmart clearance. I wont be doing all the upgraded swivels and jig heads etc as I had done to the previous one. Its going to be fished just as it came from the factory.

It is very hard to win a cold weather tournament at Lake of the Ozarks without using an umbrella rig. I hate to call it an Alabama rig because the lure has been around since at least the 1970's. Tony Albright used it for Stripers on Bull Shoals in the 1970's. It may have been used for saltwater fishing before that. I used them for striper fishing in those days. There were no limits on the amount of baits that could be used. Some guys used a rig almost the size of a real umbrella and trolled the rig. Trolling was very popular when I was a young angler.  Bombers, Lazy Ike, Leaping Lizard, Sonic, Circada were all originally made for trolling.
