Mike Cork- Question About My Abu's
« on: December 11, 2017, 05:16:15 PM »

But first, a commercial-

You can do a good deed, maybe even a GREAT one, by donating to the Adopt-a-Family deal that UB is doing thru the 19th (Lipripper will post a link to the details below, just watch).

For as little as a $20 donation you'll be entered into a drawing for cool prizes, and I'll build you a handful of custom jigs, some chatterbaits or spinnerbaits that WILL catch big bass. I have the proof!

Please guys, these folks are hurtin' and need our help.

PayPal is how I donated. They even have a deal called "PayPal Credit"- you can "borrow" that $20 (or $30, or whatever) an ease the pre-Christmas stress on your bank account. There was even a link here on the UB site the other day- it's easy!

C'mon guys & girls. Please. You'll feel good about it.

Now to my question-

I own 70+ "round" Ambassaduers dating back to 1978, all of them 4600C's... On the older ones you can tell the year by the serial number on the reels' foot- but they changed that years ago, so I won't know the years without knowing the "code".

Anyway, Mike can you tell me how many different pawls and level-wind worm gears there were for these reels from '78 to maybe 2000 or so? I want to order some spare parts (these are the about the only thing I've ever worn out on these old reels). Of course I'll send you my numbers when I get a chance.

Thanks.

Dale, if they are all 4600C's It's likely there is only one, I know they are still using the same pawl even today. However the worm gear might have changed once? I'm not for sure without looking at them. If the spool is the same width on all of them, then it's the same worm gear too.

The more I think about this I'm almost positive it's the same worm gear and pawl through out that time frame.

And that's a hell of a collection. If some of the older ones are still in good shape, a collector might pay a little more than you expect.

Like I said before, these have needed so little work over the years that it's incredible. I blame the pawl & gear issues (and there's been very few of them) on my ignorance as a young man with so little maintenance.

I was hoping they'd be the same- it makes no sense that they'd be different. I own 73 of them (counting the Royal Express I got from SteelHorse today!) and I wouldn't sell a one of them.

Thanks Mike- I'll see about ordering some of these from you this Winter. I like having spares on hand, even if I don' need  'em.

We might be able to cut out the middle man. I dont have an account with ABU but have numbers that will get you what you need. Wed pay the same price, so we can cut the shipping  ~shade

I know only four styles of line guides were used on Ambassadeurs. Only two level wind cog sets were used on their more popular sized Ambassadeurs, 4000-6500 sizes.
And yes, the same pawl is used on pretty much all of 'em made by Abu, even many of their non Ambassadeur reels.
Going out on a limb here and I'm gonna say there's probably never been a change in the worm gears on the 4600's.
HOWEVER, if there has been, it could be a critical change, such as the size of the bushings. But likely not, because I don't think the worm gear guard has ever changed sizes.
