New River2Sea Lures: Lane Changer, Top Notch and Big Mistake
« on: January 04, 2018, 12:52:08 PM »

I know these are new baits but I also know a lot of you guys aren't frozen over like we are in the North so you may have used them already...what's your opinion so far? Which do you like better and why?

I haven't played with them yet. They are on my wish list with Monster Fishing Tackle for when I make my next order though. Unfortunately we wont' have much top water action until the end of February.  :'( The Florida guys will be back to top water action next week though :-*

Those new baits look like they will illicit crazy strikes.

Haven't used any of them.
Supposedly a Chris Lane design......but the Big Mistake....was just that.
R2S made it WRONG......Chris decided they could still use his name on it.

Some how I can't help but think they are trying to cash in on the 'Whopper Plopper' craze.
In fact, Chris even says in his Icast 2017 that the 'Top Notch' is the PERFECT WP follow up bait......not so sure that I'd follow up a miss on a WP with ANOTHER fast moving prop bait?
But hey, I'M NOT ANYWHERE NEAR THE SKILL SET OF THE ELITES!

Frankly if I was going to follow up a WP with one of Chris' baits ..........it would probably be the 'Lane Changer'
Which basically is a 'walk the dog' type bait.....only with a prop.
(Incidently, he TOUTS them as being PERFECT for FLORIDA........any 'flat, calm, waters.)

Now the blades on the  Top Notch are in the rear and the Lane Changer, blades are in the front.
Big Mistake, props front and back......although it's fatter than the other two.....got a feeling Chris was telling them about two DIFFERENT lure ideas and R2S thought it was ...a single bait.

The plus side, the blades are plastic and actually fold/bend if smashed in a Bass' mouth....then snap back to proper form for next cast.
They still revolve around a metal rod...which I would think will still 'bend' in a fish's mouth.....but maybe it's titanium....but I think they would mention it in thier hype if they were.

Only one that catches any interest from me is the 'Lane Changer'.
Kind of like a Spook with an added front blade.

Iíll probably be staying away from these. Iíve yet to catch a fish on any of my whopper ploppers so I donít see these baits being different enough.
Iím sure someone here will try these at some point.

The Whopper Plopper has caught me 0 Fish so far, yet I'm not willing to give up on it yet. Why? Well when I was first turned on to UVibes the way I was shown to fish them was Reel as Fast as You Can and buzz the surface along the floating pads.

Strikes were Explosive! And Often!

Sad part if the FWC decided all those pads were evil and did their best to kill them all. That entire fishery is now pretty much devoid of pads now.

The WP makes a similar sound but in more open water. I have tried fishing it slow just making the blade turn as suggest by many, yet maybe for me there is a better way.

As to the other new lures, there is an old saying "there is nothing new under the sun". These sound like simple variations of lures already in existence.

Actually the Lane Changer has props on both the front and rear...looks like a modern day version of the Devil's Horse.

Add me to the club. I have 3 whopper ploppers and haven't caught anything on them. I'll stick with a buzzbait.

I have whopper ploppers too and they have been a great producer for me, not significantly better than other lures but enough so that I have great confidence in them.

They're a mashup of Devil's Horse, Torpedo, and Chug Plug.

Only reason I have a WP is because I found a huge one, and traded it for a smaller one...

I'll save my money and keep using what I've got.

I'm using 130, 110 and 90. I've had the most luck with the 90 but to be fair i got my 110's towards the end of last season so didn't really get to use them for a whole season. I haven't had any luck with the 130's but I have a friend who has caught monsters using them!

I started using the whopper plopper last year on our trips to Toledo and did well with them. When we went in July we got in an area where bass were busting on schools of shad and it seemed like I was getting a bite in just about every cast. Iíll probably give one of those new baits a try.

Whopper Plopper works great for me. Catches fish when typical top waters fail.

I'm still waiting for the Double Whopper Plopper to cone down from the $16 price tag. I might buy one if it would get down around $10.

The double plopper is complete garbage IMO! It doesn't run true, flops over to one side at anything over a crawl but if you crawl it the plopper tails don't spin much. To me this seemed rushed into production to take advantage of the whopper plopper craze. They are already on clearance near me for like $10. I would stick to the original WP or check out some of these new baits inspired by the WP but stay far away from the double plopper!
