How secure is your trailer?
« on: January 07, 2018, 08:56:43 AM »

A Friend of mine last Season went fishing in his Nitro at a ramp that he has used many times. He got to the ramp at O dark thirty and launched as usual. He and a Friend went fishing the Upper Chesapeake Bay most of the day and returned to the launch site. Everything seemed normal and he backed the truck into the water and loaded up his boat.
As he is driving home he brakes for a stop light and the trailer tongue destroys the tailgate on his one year old truck. It also caught the rear bumper so that will need replacement also. What do you think went wrong?
He is a long time bass guy with many years of club and tournament experience. The trailer was locked onto the ball, the ball was locked into the receiver hitch and everything seemed ok. Until he noticed that the ball was still locked into the trailer tongue. That's right someone had taken the retaining nut off the ball to steal his trailer. He does have one of those newer aluminum trailers and I am sure that is the reason.
Now I am sure that thieves don't want all trailers but his aluminum or a newer galvanized trailer might peak their want. Here in MD they do register homemade trailers and issue them a serial number which may have been their motive.
So my Tip is to secure the ball mounting nut with a spot of weld or two. Not a big weld but something that you can grind off in a couple of minutes and they won't break easily with a wrench. It might be the best money spent for the weakest link in the security on your trailer.

Good tip! Staking the nut works for me.  I just flip the adapter nut side up and use a cold chisel to make 3 stakes. I never remove the ball from an adapter once I put it on.

Good tip!!! If you ever did need to remove the ball an angle grinder will get it off, just a bit more work you want to do when you're in a hurry!

I've been known to spot weld a few in place. lol.

There's always the possibility for something to be stolen, no matter how hard you try to secure it. But they are going to have to work extra hard to get it. And thieves by nature are lazy. Otherwise they'd be out working and earning a living like the rest of us.

I put some JB Weld on the threads of the ball.  It won't come off but that's ok with me.
