DURHAM, NH -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is inviting local commercial harvesters to an informational meeting on April 4, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. regarding development of a limited access license system for participation in the northern shrimp fishery.

The meeting will take place at the Urban Forestry Center, 45 Elwyn Road, Portsmouth, NH.

For the past five years, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC)'s Northern Shrimp Section has closed the northern shrimp fishery due to record low abundance levels, primarily resulting from warming ocean waters in the Gulf of Maine. In the event that future shrimp resource conditions are sufficient for the Section to allow for a limited fishery, participation in the fishery would need to be constrained to levels that would provide greater potential for economically viable fishing for shrimp harvesters under lower quotas than have occurred in the past.

At the meeting, the Department will present several ideas for ways to limit access to New Hampshire's commercial shrimp license, based around documented shrimp landings in New Hampshire prior to the June 7, 2011, control date for northern shrimp, as well as an individual's fishing activity since the control date.

The Department is asking for comments, feedback, and preferences on the ideas presented at the meeting, as well as any additional ideas commercial harvesters might have for criteria that could be used in the development of a limited access system for the commercial shrimp license.
