Pick your tournaments based upon your strengths
« on: May 01, 2018, 06:19:30 PM »

I'm a good shallow water angler but I am a very good deep water angler. Knowing my strength, I picked tournaments which allowed me to fish deep water. This meant my tourney schedule was concentrated on summer and winter when bass are on structure or living with forage schools. Another reason I avoided shallow water tournaments, especially during the spawn, was because they were a crap shoot. The bass are shallow, plentiful and even an average angler can win the tournament. I'm not dissing anglers who like shallow water but fishing tournaments is expensive. I fished the seasons which gave me my best opportunities and saved my money for other interests. During seasons where your skill set doesn't match the season, you can still fish and have fun.

I mostly fish club events for fun and usually am around breaking even with the entry fees.
I do fish a couple of opens and like Wiz they are summer and winter tourneys. Finding those couple of areas deep holding bass has helped pay for some more fishing stuff.

Great thread Wizard.

I never cared, and I reckon I still don't (if I ever fish another derby). I wanted to be the best- my thought was "throw it at me".

In most of todays tournament circuits, you need to be able to do well in all seasons, especially were AOY's standings are involved.
In all the circuits we fish, you must enter all the tournaments if you want a chance to fish in the championship tournament.
There will be either 4 or 5 regular season events, usually starting in January and ending in June, followed by a championship tournament in the fall of that year.
If you "jackpot" only a couple of events, and do not enter the ones you don't feel like you can do well in, you are missing out on a chance to fish for top prize of at least $50,000.00 and in some cases, over $100,000.00.

Fishing in events where you don't feel like you have an advantage will make you up your game.
