Charging while using trolling motor
« on: May 08, 2018, 05:27:47 PM »

Thinking about getting a Yamaha or Honda 2000 generator. I have a 4 bank 15 amp Minnkota charger and travel some where hotel outlets are scarce. 3 questions....are these units big enough, is there a better of the 2 and can they be used while you are fishing. Thinking it would be nice to be fully charged when I turn in. Thanks

I would recommend an Inverter Generator. Normal portable generators provide pretty dirty power and if your charger is a relatively modern charger, you could damage it on a standard generator.

An inverter type is certainly “cleaner”, they also cost 3 times more. I bought a gen for the house last year and looked at all of them and most (not all) aren’t as dirty as they used to be.  Ask the manufacturers if they would recommend a non-inverter type. With that said, my house has more built-in protections than a boat.
