1987 Stratos 200 Evinrude no spark
« on: May 16, 2018, 03:29:47 PM »

My motor turns over but no spark. I have power to the ignition wire at the key switch. This boat has been sitting for several years. Any ideas what to check next.  Thanks for the help

That can be a few things.  Quick checks should include.  Is the Transmission in Neutral, Check Coil, Starter Solenoid, Things in the relay chain to include the relays.  Other things could be problematic, i.e. battery and battery cables and connections.

Bud brings up a lot of possible issues. Does it have a kill switch?

The motor turns over good. I have the neutral switch wires hooked together just to make sure that was not it. How do I check the coils? Sorry new to outboards I can work on car motors but outboards is all new to me. Thanks you for the help

Not to sound like a broken record but the motor will turn over great and have no fire if the kill switch is tripped.

Your motor should have a coil pack for each cylinder, find that by following your spark wire back. Check for voltage going into the pack. I have no idea what it should be, but I'd assume around 12 volts.

I don't think it has a kill switch. Just a key switch to start and stop as far as I know. It is on a 1987 Stratos any idea where a kill switch might be if it has one. Maybe if I take the ground off the key switch and see if that works.

Brian, Not sure but it kinda sounds like a kill switch connection.  That is commonly where it is located.  Check and see if the "button" pulls out a bit.  It it does move out and snaps back when released then this is likely where the kills switch wedge connection is.  If you can post a couple pics it sure would help.  We are kinda flying blind.

Find the kill switch, you'll find the problem. My oldest bassboat was a 78 or 79 model with an Evinrude and it had the button type kill switch on the ignition on the side of the remote. You'll need to buy a kill switch lanyard. Most important of all, don't bypass the kill switch. It can save your life and the lives of your passengers in the event you are thrown from your seat.

That's what it is. The piece will wedge under and over that button- I had a 1987 201 Pro once upon a time.

The kill switch stuck got it freed up and runs good now. The other problem is I have a short in my power red/purple to my key switch some times it hot and sometimes not
I hope to trace it out tomorrow. Thanks for all the help
