Deadeye

There are a few of you that already know, and I thank you for keeping it to yourselves as I requested.

Now however we have a Plan and it starts Today, so I guess it really doesn't matter anymore who knows.

About a year ago I knew something was wrong. Not only did I just not feel right, I had no Drive to do much of anything. All I wanted to do was sleep. Went from a guy that was always up for work at 5:30 am to sleeping in until 9-10:00. Take a nap of 2-5 hrs in the afternoon, then go to bed at 10-11:00. So basically i was tired and sleeping 10-18 hrs a day, Fatigued. I blamed it on the Meds I take for my back.

In addition to that I started having issues with being able to pee correctly. Strong Urge to Go, then couldn't but a trickle-- so much so that it was painful. Been seeing an Urologist in case I had an Enlarged Prostate (common issue as men age) but it wasn't proving to be the case.

The my PSA's shot way up from where they had been. My Urologist ordered a Biopsy after finding some hard areas in my Prostate. The results came back Positive for Cancer, about 50% of it testing Positive.

There are lots of Treatments Options, and with discussion from a Prostate Cancer Specialist I have chosen to go with a Hormone Shots and External High Dose Radiation Treatment plan. I start this with that Shots this afternoon. The Shots plus the Radiation will last for 4 Months. I will get Radiation Treatments Monday-Friday 5 Days a Week for 9 Weeks.

Not really sure what is going to happen. There are Side Effects of every type of treatment option. Hopefully there will be no Kemo involved, as there is not supposed to be.

With my Stage of Cancer (2B) I have been given a chance of 75-80% Cancer Free in 5 years if this treatment is successful. However they do not know yet if it has grown outside the Prostate, which is the Major Issue. If it has and has attached to the Pelvic Bones, well there is little they can do. Ease the pain some.

Won't know where exactly it is until more Scans and MRI's are taken. As of right now my Cancer Dr does not think, based on the Biopsy Results, that it has left the Prostate.

Through Research I have found that Prostate Cancer is the 2nd Leading Cause of Death in Men, 2nd only to Lung Cancer. Trouble is that MOST Men that have it, have No Idea that they do until it is to late.

Point here is guys, if your over the age of 40 you should be seeing an Urologist on a regular basis. 3 Months ago mine had no cause for alarm, this cancer grows slow until it reaches a certain point, then it takes off like a Wildfire. Get your self checked.

See you on the Water.

I wish you the best of luck and a full recovery. The good thing is there is a game plan, and a high % of things looking good.

Good luck Deadeye.  I went through the exact same treatment about 6 years ago.  It did help a bit and currently I am cancer free but as you know that is an uncertain cycle.  I agree with you that although it is uncomfortable a visit to a specialist should be on everyones list.

Good luck. I'm sure it will all be ok, sounds like they know what they're doing for sure. Just out of curiosity, if you don't mind me asking, how old are you? Reason I ask is at my last check up, my psa was elevated and my Dr. had me go to a urologist who seemed to think it was a one time fluke thing based on my past results. I have no issues but it is obviously a concern as we get older. Again, best wishes for a full recovery.

I'm 56.

My Primary Dr sent me to an Urologist for elevated PSAs some years ago. After treating me for a Prostate Infection they went back down to normal.

That was it until like I said a year or so ago.

As we age our numbers go up. Crazy thing is it really doesn't matter what number you are running at, it's when it takes a big jump that throws the warning.

Fred thanks for sharing this with us and I have been cancer free for a little over 2 years now thank the Lord. I know what your going through with them Radiation treatments. I had 30 rounds of treatments along with Chemo and hope that the Hormone Shots and External High Dose Radiation does the trick and you don't need any Chemo. I will add you to my list of Cancer friends to pray for.

Fred, best wishes my friend. Modern medicine is wonderful and I'm confident you can beat this thing. If you ever want to talk to someone offline give me a call. Although I haven't had cancer my wife has been through both breasts and cervix so I've seen what modern medicine is capable of. She is going on 10 years cancer-free.

We'll be praying for you Deadeye. Stay strong and confident! Life has changed but if you keep a PMA it's going to be a change for the better. Just think about all the fishing you'll get to do without all the rest.

Sorry to hear about this Fred. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in December and we are not alone in this. Quite a few members here have been down this road and there are many success storied they have shared with me. Some have been cancer free 10 or more years so keep that in mind.

Try and keep a PMA (I know it can be hard sometimes, believe me I know) as you will no doubt have times when the scary thoughts will creep in and will get to you. But every doctor I have talked to (and so far I have gotten second and third opinions) tell me that prostate cancer is a curable situation in this day and age.

Keep us posted as things progress. My family and I will keep you in our daily prayers.

God bless you brother.

Sorry to hear. My mom is currently fighting small cell cancer. Its tough. Getting real sick of this cancer crap, seems to be getting more common than a cavitity. Hopefully you won't need that chemo. Stay strong, stay positive, and stay active! I'll be hoping and wishing the best for you!

My Thanks to each and every one of you.

Had the first shot yesterday. They put ice on your belly to numb it, then inject the shot. Didn't feel the needle but man did that shot sting!

It leaves a bubble or lump under the skin when it's done. It's supposed to absorb slowly I guess.

I had the choice of 1 Shot every Month OR 1 shot now then 1 more that is a 3-month dose. I chose to get the 1 + the 3-Month Shot. Saves me trips back and costs a little less as well, due to not paying Admin Fees for 2 more shots.

Speaking of money. Due to how much I spend on meds and Drs every month our Deductible has been met for the year. Our Out-Of-Pocket should be met by the time I get the 1st Radiation Treatment. According to the Financial Guy at the Center each Rad Treatment runs over $2,000.00 so take that x's 45 and you get a quick $90,000.00. Plus whatever the Drs Fee is.

Glad we have Insurance.

Capt. BassinLou

I was blown away at the costs involved with my wife's cancer treatment and surgeries. We hit our deductible within the first 2 weeks of initiating the plan to remove the cancer. Our concern at this point is hitting the max ceiling of insurance payout, due to the exorbitant costs.

SFL BassHunter

Insurance is awesome when you need to use it, and a scam when you don't lol.

But yeah that's very costly.

When I had the treatments done, the cost finished up at just over $125K.  My insurance covered all but $10K  All of this was about 5 or 6 years ago.

Sorry to hear this Deadeye. My Brother, five years younger, went through the same exact thing five years ago. He had been cancer free now for two. You are still added to my prayer list here.

It is one of the things most men don't pay attention to until it's to late.  Yes it is important to get checked.  A good doctor should check all men over 40 every year.
Prostate cancer can be beat if caught early.  It's scary when your doctor says he wants to see you and to bring your spouse.  Next month it will be 12 years ago I heard the words "You Have Prostate Cancer".  I chose what was best for me and last year I was still cancer free.  Next month I go in for my annual check up.
Enjoying retirement in the great Pacific Northwest.  I've turned into a fair weather angler.  Why do it today when I can do it tomorrow?

Prayers coming your way, Deadeye. Unfortunately, as guys, we are all immortal till we're told were not.
