The Land of Orange Barrels
« on: July 13, 2018, 06:32:39 PM »

In our general area south of Myrtle Beach, we have been enduring road construction for a tad over three years.  A Major express hwy is being extended to allow traffic a better connection to the Murrells Inlet, Garden City area.  This new extention brings traffic to hwy 707 that runs from Socastee SC to Murrells Inlet and it is being widened from two lanes to 5 lanes.  The interchange on the HWY 17 bypass at Glenns Bay Road has been re constructed to provide an overpass for drivers on the bypass and the last item is the widing of Glenns Bay road from Hwy 17 bypass to Hwy 17business near Surfside Beach, SC.  These are major projects that just seem to have been going on for ever.  Now all four of these projects are nearing completion and are anticipated to be fully finished by this fall.  It sure will be nice not to have to deal with all the construction and related traffic congestion.

Our area is in a significant boom time right now.  Housing developments are being built just about everywhere you look.  We are a retirement destination so many of our new residents are seniors just starting retirement and the improved roads will certainly help a lot.

Bud, I hate to tell you this but the construction never ends, those orange barrels and road cones are in our future for all eternity. I know this because we have a declining population, they're moving down by you, but we still have only 2 seasons, construction, which lasts about 10 months and winter, they have to use our taxes somehow or there's no need to collect them.

We've had orange barrels in our area since Katrina, the planned evacuation root was/is through Shreveport and it obviously didn't work well. They blame infrastructure but it rests mostly on that stupid mayor they had at the time in New Orleans that kept telling everyone "wait, the weathermen get it wrong all the time."

But every since, road work has been ongoing to get I-49 from the gulf coast all the way to Kansas City and the hardest part is either side of Shreveport and north to Texarkana...

If you listened to Bob and Tom back in their day, you'll know the song I'm always reminded of when I see a row of orange barrels.
