My first captained win
« on: August 06, 2018, 06:55:30 PM »

Yesterday I fished on a part of the Allegheny river I've never been on.
I looked at a map and noted several spots with good current breaks.
We get to the ramp for what we thought would be about 14 boats in our tourney, to find over 30 boats getting ready to launch. There was three tourneys going to fish this 9 mile stretch of river.

I threw out any plans right away, and went fishing. I wanted to look for subtle breaks but another problem was how foggy it was.
So I started down stream away from most of the others and looked for little breaks. I got to the first one and hooked a dink and had a decent fish blow up on the whopper plopper. Moved to spot 2 and the second cast got a solid 1-1/2 lber on the plopper. Then all dinks after that, till spot three when on the second cast I got blown up on and it missed. I grabbed the old hula grub and on the second cast with it caught the next 1-1/2 lber.
We continued to just cruise the river till a spot looked good and would pick off one keeper and a couple of dinks on each spot. We did this till I caught our limit and culled 2 out, my partners only keeper got culled out. Only three times did we see anyone else on the spots we caught them on. They were just big enough to hold a fish or two and got missed by most guys.
From what I heard only 4 limits were caught by all three tourneys and mine was second biggest at a whopping 7.68 lbs.
Yes this is the same Allegheny river that the classic was won on in the Pittsburgh three rivers classic. Look it up and you will see I had a big bag.

By just going fishing I was able to put the pattern together easier and was not stubborn to keep me from moving around.

Glad to hear you won. Sounds like moving around was the key to your win.

Congrats on the win and not giving up.  I'm surprised they allowed three tournaments at the same time from the same ramp.  Around here tournaments are much more controlled than that, but then we also don't have the bass populations some other areas do.

Ron,

There is supposed to be a max of 2 tournaments per boat ramp. But if you have less than 10 boats you don't need to get a permit.
In the spring we have one lake that is legal to keep fish and it gets 4-5 tourneys each Saturday and Sunday in April and May.

 ~c~ ~c~ congrats Zippy :toot:

A win is a win, you fish the conditions. Winning with 8 pounds is just as good (sometimes harder) as winning with 25 pounds.

Don't get me wrong guys. I was super happy with the bag I caught. It is big for that part of the river.
And yes I believe those are harder to win.
I was super happy just putting the pattern together and following through with it.

Yep you done good Zippy. :toot: :toot:

Some places fish small and you figured em out and got the job done. And that's ALL that counts.

I really do have many of you to thank for my better fishing.
But the best advice I have gotten was to just go fishing. Since then I have limited out in every tourney and placed in all but 1.
Thanks Mike, D.W, Wiz, Smallie, Oldfart, and everyone else

Well so far this year I have won just enough to cover all the entry fees for the year. But I have 5 more to go to make a "  profit " not counting fuel.
