I can't wait to get my new DC. The Calcutta DC is a much loved and coveted reel.

This reel is a game changer.

Shame though us lefties have to wait until September to buy our reels. Hurry up shimano.

Hate the waiting game. I keep hoping everytime i check my email,i have a notice that mine has been shipped. I did see a few 151 and 151xg out but no 151hg(which is what i pre-ordered)

I just bought a left hand retrieve DC in 8.5:1 gearing that I'm looking to pair with either a Dobyns Sierra 734C or upgrade to a ChampionXP in a similar length/speed.

It's my first ever baitcaster.  Already ruined a spool of brand new 832 in 15# and ruined about half a spool of Berkley Super8 in 8lb (scavenged it off my old spinning reel when I upgraded).

Anything I should be looking at upgrading on it to make it even better and last longer?  It's i credibly light compared to my old spinning reel - a Penn Battle 2 4000 series.  Lol

Yikes... tough lesson to learn.   Just know, although a reel may have DC in front of its name, a well trained thumb should always be at the ready. Enjoy the new the reel.

Lol. With a sufficiently high braking setting, it doesn't.  My problem was I didn't realize what I'd done after hitting the thumb release and watched the lure hit the ground.  Bam - huge overrun.  D'oh!

The day I caught that big fish, I was throwing 1/4oz bullet weight and a 3/0 hook/worm into the wind with 15# Trilene XT. 

Setting 2 was a bit light on braking and I had a few minor birdsnests.  Setting 3 sacrificed little distance but resulted in no birdsnests.

So far it's been a joy to use!

Story of the day I got it is a fun one.

There's one retailer in Ohio who participates in Dobyn's replacement program, Fisherman's Central up in Akron.  I live down near Marietta, so to get up there it's about a 2hr drive. 

When I went to a wedding, I brought my fishing stuff and waders so a buddy and I could go wade in the Maumee river and try to catch some river smallies.  Well, when we were packing up, I laid my Dobyns 692SF up against the car and forgot to put it IN the car.  Apparently I backed over it and broke the tip.

So I decided at that point I was going to make the move to a baitcaster - had to get new rod anyway, so good a time as any.  Decided I wanted to get a Sierra 734C rod to go with it.

Couple weeks later, my brother and I head up and pay the replacement fee and any others to swap rods - well, I didn't read the replacement policy thoroughly enough and they could only replace the one I broke for the exact same rod and not exchange for a casting rod. 

Kinda pointless to have the reel without a rod to use it, right?  So I just had them get me a cheap rod in the 1/4-1oz range and they got me a 6'6" Berkley Cherrywood HD. 

So we leave there and drive down to Piedmont lake so we can do some fishing near the dam.  Couple hours go by and I mange to ruin that spool of 832 and lose about half a spool of Berkley Super8 8# to a birdsnest.  Yikes.

By now it's getting dark, it's warm and the bugs are eating us alive - but plenty of surface bites.  So we persevere and I'm using a Whopper Plopper 90.

Managed to catch my first-ever smallmouth with it.



At that point, I'm like, "I'm done - caught a fish, sick of these bugs..."  Brother decides he's done too (didn't catch anything) and we drive the hour-ish home. 

So, now I'm waiting until payday to send in the 692SF I have that I haven't used and decide if I want to just swap out with the Sierra 734C or if I want to spend the difference in MSRP and upgrade to a ChampionXP. 

Decisions, decisions...

I would just upsize your line to make the inevitable backlashes easier to deal with. 40-50lb braid, 12-17lb mono/flouro. A good cleaning a few times a year goes a long way. I've got a citica from 2007 that is still in my starting lineup, and I'm no reel specialist. I just oil things that look like it should be oiled, a little grease on the thing that new reels have grease on and plenty of reel magic.

Indeed, when I caught my current PB, I was using 14# Trilene XT.  Much easier to pull out birdsnests.

Have you tightened up that cast control knob? Even though the DC is supposed to take the guesswork out of it, if it's so loose that it just keeps spinning after the lure touches the ground, it's just too loose.

Yup!  I did that after I cut that braid off and put the Super8 on.

Haven't had a single problem with it since I did that and put the 14# mono on it.
