I use what ever came in my reel and just clean them and use a lighter weight reel oil sparingly in them. Of course you need to touch them up with a drop here and there during the season depending on usage time. I also clean mine every winter and re oil lightly for next trip.

Reel guys that mod reels hmm let me see.. I bet LMG will stop by  ;D

Mike Cork runs a reel cleaning business. If you're going to tune it, super tune it.

Bocas are Chinese garbage. ZPi, Hedgehog Studio, and HawgTech are gonna be the better choices.

I have ZPI bearings on 2 of my Tatula's and I have to tell you they are ridiculous! Those things turned my Tatula Type R and Tatula CT into rockets. Heck I even finesse with them when I need to.
The Tatula CT completely unspools if I am not careful if I tie a frog to it. It goes a mile and a half.

I highly recommend them. BTW LMG did the mods on those reels. So he knows what he's talking about.

Man,  you opened up a bucket of lizards with that question!  You will get a lot of good opinions from a lot of guys who really do know what they are talking about.  Within the next day or so you will have more information on the subject than you know what to do with.  =)

My experience with bearing upgrades comes from only two reels,  so I am no expert by any method of measurement.  I have one upgraded with Boca orange seal bearings and one with Hedgehog bearings.  I cannot remember the name of the bearings that used from hedgehog.  i can see a pretty substantial difference in both.  I have not tried the ZPI bearings yet.

Several of my reels have some sort of bearing upgrade made to them, and the ZPI and HawgTech hybrid bearings are really nice.

I was actually looking at bearing upgrades for my Curado and found the Hedgehogs.
Wondering if I should go ahead and replace all of them, or just certain ones?
The Curado K has what? One or two bearings in the right plate, I think two for the "X-ship" supporting the pinion, and another in the palm side?
I'd like a longer cast, but at lower speeds such as when retrieving I really don't think I'd be able to feel the difference in upgraded bearings. I'd read somewhere that it's only necessary to replace two bearings in the Curado for longer casts. Don't make sense to me, I'd figure all of 'em contacting the spindle would affect it.

On a Shimano you just need 2 bearings for the spool: 3x10x4
