Anyone ever done anything with hickory nuts? We have loads of them. I found a recipe for hickory nut butter & syrup. ????????

Tried them raw once or twice. Bitter as I recall and almost as much work as getting into black walnuts.

Yeah itís not easy & thereís not much in there.

From what Iíve found you can substitute them for pecans.

But I found a recipe for syrup. Gonna try that.

I like them. I crack them in a vice as it's the only tool I have that has enough pressure. You can lightly roast them over a fire or in the oven.

Walnut, hickory, pecan, several others, all the same family. That's why there's so many similarities.
In fact, the word "walnut", is correct for the nut from any tree of the Juglandaceae family. So a hickory nut is a "walnut" from a hickory tree, a pecan is a "walnut" from a pecan tree. A walnut's walnut is the walnut of walnuts. Technically, you could have a bowl of mixed pecans, hickory nuts, and walnuts, just call it a bowl of walnuts, and be right. Or at least not wrong.
