Following Not Biting
« on: November 09, 2018, 12:49:27 PM »

OK Lets hear your answers.  This week we had a lot of bass that would follow the bait but would not bite.  Just curious what your take is on this common problem.  We tried multiple presentation styles and bait types but the most active were square bills but often they would just follow although we did catch a few including one that was foul hooked.  I guess he took a run at it and missed but the hooks got it in the side.

Different color may be the ticket

Had that happen recently at my local park. Lot's of trailers and lots of tail grabs when I switched to a Uvibe.
Missed quite a bit of fish.
Unfortunately, with just a hand full of baits and lures in my fanny pack I couldn't find one that triggered a real bite.
I agree with Brandon. Different color,
Or a slight action change.
If the square bill was working, a square bill with a slightly different wobble, either tighter or wider. I think when they are following, they are attracted to what you are throwing, but there's something slightly wrong.

Speed it up. Bounce it off stuff. Chartreuse hand grenades.

Many follows/misses are caused, I believe, because the bass gets too good a look at the bait.

There are 3 things that I try (in this order) and I SWEAR that one of them WILL work!

1) I will try to change the retrieve to something that will elicit a reaction. Since the bass are curious enough to follow, I feel like I am at least throwing the right bait so I will typically speed up the retrieve and add more pauses/direction changes.

2) I will change colors/actions but stay with the same kind of lure. Swimbaits are a good example. Since I am already trying to match the hatch in the first place, changing to something with more or less tail action might be the deal.

Lastly, and this one is KEY...

3) Change locations! If I can't get those stupid fish to bite with steps 1 and 2, then I'd rather go somewhere else where I don't have to think about those fish anymore. I might come back later if I feel like it is a timing thing.

Now let me tell you what happened.  After trying a number of the methods some have mentioned, I just left the location.  It was a very overcast day when this was happening.  Water is very stained and water temp was at 66.  Very slight breeze from the west.  I returned to the spot a little later during a short break in the clouds and the sun came out for a bit.   After the sun came out the fish did begin to feed a bit and we picked up a few bass. As it turns out these few days yielded dinks and no big girls wanted to play.  I guess the change was most likely the sun being out for a short time.

Lots of good answers, color and speed are the big things to change.
