Fuel Line Replacement

Just an observation.  A couple months back, I had the fuel lines in the Ranger replaced.  It was showing signs of cracking and I had noticed that when running on plane at about 3500 rpms you would start hearing a harmonic sound.  The motor was not missing but it had a cadence to this harmonic (don't know how else to esplain it)  Motor did not miss and still performed ok but just in case I had the fuel lines replaced along with all of the connectors.  Also noticed the fuel sender gaskets had a very slight ting that indicated that some level of fuel seeping was possible and I could smell gas from time to time.

Now the gaskets are sealed and a complete new set of fuel lines installed and I just wanted to report that the harmonic sound is no long present.  No gas smell and the motor runs stronger than ever.  I ran a little WOT the other day which is very rare for me and I want to report that the GPS speed was 63.8 mph.  I guess that is super given that my boat is an old 300 series hull with a Johnson 150 fast strike.

Boy, that Oil pump stuff is scary.

 When my brother in law bought his old Mako/200 Rude it needed engine work, and he refused to do anything but premix after the work was done cuz his wrench told him that that was what caused the original failure.
He had that boat for ~10 years without issue- 100% SW, but he diligently flushed with FW EVERYTIME it came home, and changed out impeller annually.

He's already warning me about it!

Of course I've read a bunch about the issues here and elsewhere, including D.W. mentioning the diaphragm failing, and talks about not getting variable rate causing plug fouling etc... geesh, I feel like I'm wading in a thick swamp just waiting to get sucked under.

I really love my boat and it is a pleasure to run and fish.  The fast strike is an awesome motor but it is very aged.  You should consider that it would be likely that major motor problems are probably just around the corner.  My wish list is to one day re-power to a modern motor in the 175hp category.  The newer 150s just don't have the performance of the older fast strikes.

Over the past few years I have spent over $12K re doing my boat and you can read about it on the front page in my most current blog.  Many folks have told me that the 300 series hulls are among the best and after all these years I believe them but it does lack some of the modern design that is desirable.  A big answer is rod locker storage is just not designed for todays longer rods.  I have added some features to update but can't do anything about the size of the rod lockers but not really a big deal for me.

Muzz, you are gonna have to face it.  Buying any old boat is a crap shoot.  If you decide to go that route rest assured it is not always the cheapest choice in the long run.
