Well I tried today for a few hrs.

First strike I had tossed my jig up into a place I thought looked fishy. Well it had some floating broke cattails laying in the hole I pitched to and my jig trailer happened to catch the edge of one of them momentarily suspending the jig. All in a fraction of a second a big shiny side rolled up on it. I admit I haven't been fishing in a couple weeks and I got excited and blew it. I never felt the fish, and never saw it inhale the lure. ^-^ Man talk about having a 1 on 1 ass eating. I chewed my own butt for all of 60 seconds. lo

Second fish. I had some new weedless wacky hooks I wanted to try. I proceeded to tie my Trilene knot. I rigged up a GY 6" Senko and in she went. FYI I have a real dislike for fishing anything remotely finesse. So anyway I let it flutter to bottom wait a few seconds and lift my rod tip. About the third time I had one. I proceeded to lean into him not so gracefully. I hate little hooks that bend, I have to be careful or I ruin them. Well about the time I know hes hooked and the fight is on... my line breaks.  :( Was fresh 15lb Big Game mono I had just put on for this year. After inspection I think I stressed the knot to much trying to make sure it was tight.

Lessons I got refreshed on today:
1. Patience!
2. Quit cinching my knots so hard.
3. Go fishing more often.

Steve,

Excellent lessons learned today. Now put them into action soon.

I agree. I am hoping to be back on the water Monday. Looks like a great day setting up if the weatherman is right.

No piggies yesterday unfortunately, but they do live there. I'm happy to see you broke the ice FD.  ~c~

Water temps here Friday was 53.6F.

Suppose to be cloudy and 66F today but sunny and 73F Monday. It might make some water ripe for some moving fish.   8)

Lee,

From the pic I only get 16.75" I can only judge what I see.

Everyone,
Just a reminder that we are judging with a closed mouth as it is the law in most states.

I also tested it with mouth closed and open and you can squeak out an extra inch on big fish.

A state "law" for what purpose? Most records are weight based.

From my perspective, FD's fish is at least a 1/4 long at the head of the board.

Just a suggestion, dont take the fun out of this. It's only for bragging purposes, anyway.

I think I recall several times folks having trouble just getting the fish to cooperate to get a picture. Fishing alone it can be difficult to get the fish to lay still and you take a picture. Two hands to do 3 or 4 things is making it more difficult. On a yak one flop and you just lost that fish. Heck I have lost more than one off my boat before.

As long as everyone is playing by the open rules of the fish touching one end of the stick while having the picture taken why does it matter? Everyone can have mouth open closed or 1/2 one way or the other so its all fair.

Insisting the mouth have to be closed makes it more difficult and starts making it a mater of debate. With no set position of the mouth there is no argument if the fish is measured one way or another.

As for FD fish. I can see it either way 16.75" or 17". But if I was making the call 16.75" is much clearer. Had the lower jaw been more centered on the scale I think 17" would be indisputably clear. It is a little hard to clearly see it in that shadow imho.

Barry,

I am not complaining about the mouth open on Lee's fish. Just no wide open where you gain a lot. I understand that they are hard to control but I can make one have its mouth open if I wanted. It was just a reminder.

Now looking at the scale I can only go by where the tail is. Clearly the head is at the end of the board or maybe a little past it. But If I guessed how far it is who is going to trust the competition?

Now as to trying to have their mouths closed it puts everything on the same level. And like you said it is just for bragging rights. We have few rules, you can fish when, where ( exceptions rule 4b ) , and how you like to.
Just sign-up on time and take a proper picture is all we are asking.

Just trying to keep from having arguments here.

To be a legal fish to possess in most states it has to be a certain length from closed mouth to tip of pinched tail. Some have to be with an open tail.
Just watch a Big Bass competition on a Slot lake. The officials pinch the mouth shut on every fish.

Ok, but I dont have an official to hold the mouth and tail while I snap a photo.

I'll try my best to comply.
