Malware scanning programs
« on: June 17, 2019, 11:34:21 AM »

What are some of the better "free" downloads that help scan a computer for malware. If you type this into a search engine there are billions and I'm sure most are junk. I run kaspersky as my regular virus protection but every once in a while I'd like to check for junk that may have found it's way onto my machine.

Yes Malwarebytes. They still have a free version and I have it on all my machines. Does a great job. The only thing it lacks is that after the trial period it doesn't run automatically in the background for real-time scans. From that point on it's an after-the-fact situation that you have to launch manually anytime you want to check for malware. But even then it does a really good job of cleaning EVERYTHING related to a threat from your machine.

it's rumored Kaspersky used to be a KGB agent.

personally, i would use windows defender if you are running 10.  It wouldnt hurt to run malwarebytes once in a while either

I've been using Kaspersky for years now.  Haven't had a virus or malware once in that time.  I generally get it for free every year after the mail in rebate.  I think I ended up having to pay $19 this year, as the rebate didn't cover the whole cost.  Most of the time newegg always seem to have some kind of special on it.

i am not saying Kaspersky is bad...just saying there is a possibility that he was a KGB guy at one time.

I've used it. I use CCLEANER, they have a free version and are good, I also use McAfee and haven't had any problems.

I've used 2 with good results. Both have free versions and of course upgraded versions that you pay for. These are primarily malware programs, not anti-virus although Adaware advertises as an antivirus.
