Baitcaster weird wobble noise
« on: July 03, 2019, 09:36:58 AM »

I just bought my first baitcaster (Abu Garcia Gen 4 Revo SX, 6.6:1) and it makes a weird noise.
I do not know if this is normal, but when I shake the reel from side to side there is a wobbly noise like something is moving from side to side inside the reel, but only a very short movement, I can feel it move to so there is definitely something loose...
Is this normal or should I be worried?
EDIT:  https://youtu.be/tKbUJYcwNnU video in which I am retrieving, and you can hear the wobbly sound

Video 2 where it is louder: https://youtu.be/e8MuCSaBz2A

Check the spool. Can you take the spool and move it side to side? If so, tighten the cast control cap till it just stops moving side to side.

The spool is tight and I still hear the sound. https://youtu.be/tKbUJYcwNnU you can check it in this vid, turn your volume up. You hear the sound with retrieving aswell, which is what I am doing in the video. It's like rattling but not very sharp rattling.

You could just be hearing the crankshaft moving in and out.

I found the source of the sound, it's the thing with the gear ratio on it (I don't know the names, English is not my first language sorry) moving from left to right, so moving closer to the reel and moving further way from the reel. If I keep pressure on it while retrieving, the sound is eliminated. Is this a normal sound and can I fix this?

Thats the drag star, which is screwed onto the crankshaft, which is whats moving in and out.

Can I make it tighter? or is this sound perfectly normal?

sometimes you can shim them up, but chalk it up to inferior tolerances.

I don't know what you mean..

If you know anything about taking a reel apart and working on them, then I could explain it to you. Otherwise, it would be in your best interest to send it to someone, or just leave it be. There is still a chance that it cant be shimmed and tightened. As long as you understand that.

I don't have any experience at all, like I said it is my first reel. Would the reel be okay in the long term if I do nothing about it, or is it important to do something about it?

Youll be fine. Common issue in most reels, especially Doyos.

Well I'll say this, I have two Revo X4's, and like 'em so much I'm wondering if I can get them cheaper straight from Doyo. Know anything about that LMG?
