Bad trailer hub?
« on: October 15, 2019, 09:13:05 AM »

I was greasing up my hubs and noticed that 1 or more had grease inside the hub.  I attached a photo of the worst one.  Does this mean I may have a bad seal or need new bearings?

Mine have done that too. I believe it's from shooting too much grease in them. I have less now that I stopped using the pneumatic grease gun.

How does the grease look in the back of the hub?

I agree with Princeton Man.  Just too much grease that was forced past the "floating disk" due to adding too much grease or grease under pressure.  Just clean it up and put the dust seal back in place.  I also have added a bearing buddy bra to my hubs just to keep it neat and keep from having grease dripping onto the wheel.  I just serviced my hubs last week and had a smaller but similar condition so, just clean it up and move on.

Just a regular grease gun.

I'd say clean it up and rock and roll. If you're really concerned, pull the wheel and look at the back of it, if there is grease slung everywhere then sure change the seal, but if it's just a spot here and there, it's the nature of the beast.

It's normal, when you go to add grease check to see where the disc is, if it's pushed out you don't need to add any. If you do need to add grease be careful, when the disc stops moving stop, it's quite easy to blow the seal out of the back of the hub. Don't ask me how I know.

LOL, I am used to greasing automotive/tractors, etc and realized it popped out of the front, which was always a sign that you had enough.  I may need to check the back seals :shocking:
