Quick clean on a baitcasting reel
« on: March 10, 2020, 11:36:05 PM »

I thought this might help some people out.  It's not a full clean on a baitcasting reel, but a partial clean that shows you hot to take the bearings out and clean them and put them back.  If you got a baitcaster that is squealing or just not casting far.  This video might just help you solve the problem yourself without having to send that reel away for service.
I usually do a full clean every few years, but I do a quick clean every spring before putting the reels to use.

Thanks for sharing your video. With spring in the air, this is a good time to do this  ~c~

I would think a complete teardown before the season starts and a quick clean during the season would be the best way to care for your reels.

Rodney I do a complete tear down about every 4th year.  The years between I do a quick tune up like the video above.  I'll have to do one on the complete tear down.  You can take the drag washers out an grease them, or replace them like I have with dry washers instead.  They never need to be greased.  Just kept clean and perform so much better.  Lot of saltwater guys use them.

I think we are going to agree to disagree about this. If your way works well for you then don't change.

A lot of things can factor on time periods, like how many reels you have, and how often you use them. Like for me, I have plenty of reels, but dont use them all to justify tearing them down every year to clean them, because I might only use one of them a handful of times in a year. I also cover my reels on the boat, dont let them get dirty on the outside, and thats prolongs the life of needing a full tear down.

I agree I have several of the low 5:1 gear ratio reels I use but not very often. The fact I have several makes it even less they get used a season. Then as you said I keep reel covers on unless its out on deck to be used. The rest of the time they sit covered mostly at home on the rack. I bet I could do a complete tear down on these once every 5 to 10 years and be fine.

This sort of follows suit to my other reels also. Me being just one guy with plenty of reels I can see some not needing thoroughly cleaned as often. I do have a select few I use quite often and those get complete cleanings every year.

Partially on this topic I started a spread sheet to keep logs on my equipment. I'm still working on it. One thing I was having trouble with was service dates and I had no way to keep record of certain criteria. So this may or may not be a good idea but I was going to try it.

I already like the idea I can see my commonly used reels side by side and can compare features. For example if I was to shop for a reel I can see how many in what gear ratio I already have. I can compare IPT at a glance. And when looking for parts or information I have linked the models to schematics or manuals for that specific reel.

Click on the picture to see it.  :)

Spot on with that evaluation!
