Baitcaster casting question
« on: August 07, 2020, 09:34:27 AM »

When I cast, it seems my lure just stops mid air and then falls, almost like the bait caster is stopping it.  Yesterday, I also had an issue where the line was looping in the back of the reel and catching on my thumb.  What am I doing wrong?  I have the brakes wide open.  Is this part of the problem?  My son said he noticed the same thing.

Have all the brakes off could be causing the loop issue. The stopping in mid cast is probably that the cast control knob is too tight. Try backing the cast control knob out until you can feel the spool move side to side in the frame. Then slowly tighten it back down until the side to side movement just stops.

After make and easy cast and see what happens.

Thanks Mike, I will check those.  Maybe something got messed  up at some point.

LGM, I think the looping thing happened with the one I bought off you, but to be honest, yesterday was the first day it happened, and I have been using it for a few weeks now.  The stopping mid air happens with a lot of my reels, The Diawa I bought my son, my Curados, Citica, etc

While you are at it tie the line to something outdoors and walk all the line off. Tighten the line and reel it back with pressure on the line. Possible a loop near the spool is standing up when the spool is spinning at speed on the cast. I had the same problem last week. Mike's tip will probably fix it but I would do both.

The loops are probably catching and causing the stopping. Open the sideplate, make sure that you have 2 of the brakes on, and set the outside dial on the high number. Also, do what Mike said about the spool tension knob being just tight enough to eliminate "side to side" play in the spool. Now cast, and make your adjustment using the outside dial on the sideplate. Go down one number at a time till you get to the breaking point. Always use your brakes to your advantage.  ~shade
