Braid - Which Color to Use?
« on: October 02, 2020, 06:10:08 PM »

Hi-vis yellow, or moss green? I have not yet learned to watch my line - I suppose that is a skill I should learn. My initial take would be to go with moss green but that is only because that is the color I see in most of the waters I fish.

But if I'm working a bait on the bottom, for example, would it benefit me to learn to be a line watcher? If so, then I reckon hi-vis yellow would be a wise choice.

My knowledge on this topic is very limited and as such, I'd like to know what y'all think.

Any color, I like them bright because it it easier for me to see.  But there are people who can line watch dark colors, although they are usually younger.

Its all what you can see better, I use pink line, braid and mono because it contrasts against the background I am fishing.  Blue line kind of blends in on some days so I stay away from that color, as an example.

I throw all colors because I buy when the line I like is on sale. So sometimes its moss green but if there is a good sale on a Hi Viz color I stock up. I am like Pferox I like them bright because it it easier for me to see.

Iím not too old with good eyes, and I still prefer Hi Vis. I only use braid on my spinning reels. Itís easier to see little ticks in the line and when it starts slowly moving.

I use High Viz Yellow and green. With the yellow I use a FC leader.

Thanks for all the input, guys!

Looks thus far like the majority goes with brighter lines for visibility. Some indicate using a leader, some with no indication either way.

My eyes aren't the best anymore so I'll go with visibility to start. Don't know if I'll use a leader right away - probably won't at first. If I'm not doing as well as I think I should be, I'll move to using a leader. I've seen opinions either way so I'll try it both ways and see what works best for me.

Hi viz all the way, it's why they make magic markers, you make the several feet before the bait whatever color you want it.

I don't remember the brand but they used to sell uncolored line (white) at a cheaper price, I used to buy that stuff and was very happy with it.  I can't find it around here anymore so just went back to my bright colors.

Yellow on small sizes Pink on heavier. Yes I said pink with a leader. I can see it great

I think pink is the best color, I got hooked on it after I bought a spool of pink FireLine, which they don't make anymore, (Of Course).  It is hard to find locally but when I can I get it.  I have a large stock of HiViz mono to use up, so I won't be getting anymore pink mono for a while, although I will keep a spool of 40 and 80lb pink on hand for making the best leader material IMHO.

I didnít mention, but I use a FC leader. As I stated, I only use braid on spinning reels, so Iím pretty much finesse fishing with them. Thatís why I always use a leader. Drop shot, shaky head, wacky rig, etc.

The fish don't care what color your line is. They can see it all including flourocarbon.

I am a line watcher, and I'm old(er) with aging eyes. I use hi-vis braid exclusively and I fish some of the clearest water on the planet. Hasn't made any difference in the amount of bites I get.

I was live baiting Shad on a pier in Florida for Spanish Markel once and I had HiViz green braid line with a 40lb Floro bite leader.

There was enough weight to keep that shad just under the water.  I was feeling hit after hit, but nothing hooking up.  I started line watching a little closer and low and behold the Mackerel was hitting on the colored line as it bisected the water surface, and not going after the bait.

I added another couple of feet to my leader and that did the trick, I started catching a bunch of fish.

THAT is the only time that I can say Floro leader ever helped me out.

This !  I fish in mostly stained water and when I use Hi Vis I color the last 2 feet with a black sharpie.
