Federal Requirements for Trailer Lighting
« on: January 05, 2007, 01:04:14 PM »

I'm replacing a few lights on my trailer right now - found this information in my search for mandatory requirements.  Good information to have a general knowledge of:

My boat trailer is over 80" wide and i don't have the id (middle tail) lamp. I've seen plenty of folks that didn't have them and never heard of anyone getting pulled over or ticketed in Georgia or Florida for this.

Please realize different states have other requirement laws than federal your specific state may not require Ident. lights on 80" wide trailers
check with the NATM National Association of Trailer Manufactures. They have a state buy state lists of requirements.

Swede, that link you posted I believe are manufacturers requirements, so if you have a trailer that does not have this equipment, as long as the requirements were met at the date of manufacture, usually anything additional added since is not required to be added.   ~shade

Federal trumps state, state can add but may not delete without a special waiver.
