Help!!! What type of line should I buy?
« on: October 23, 2007, 11:38:29 AM »

I recently bought a new Extreme set-up from BPS. When asked if I wanted it spooled I said sure put some 12 lb test on it. I don't know what kind of line they used but it is horrible. I have gone to Lock and Dam 5 everyday this week and every time I when to reel in a fish my line would snap. Now I don't know if they put some old line or lower lb test than what I asked, but this has never happened. I fished way down from the lock so the water wasn't really tough. The one fish I did get in was a 2 lb sand bass. Also some times when I would cast the line would just snap and send my bait flying through the air. Please help! I have been looking at numerous different lines but don't know what to buy. P-Line CXX?, Spiderwire Stealth? Berkley Vanish? I would greatly appreciate any advice.

P-line is my favorite mono and have also been using the p-line floro recently but have had some minor problems.....Power pro is great braid.....but i think the strongest mono might be suffix 12lb i got snagged when fishing with a buddy on the Hudson River and tried to snap it off and ended up having to cut it because i was pulling the boat.....hope this helps a little bit......

You said Lock and Dam #5 are you in Louisiana fishing the Red River?

If so go ahead and raise the strength of your line to at least 17lb (at least) for anything you will be fishing for in the red (except maybe white perch). Actually I would recommend using the BPS excel line, I have been using it for years and love it.

Thanks!

I have some excel ill give that a try. I just wonder what they spooled it with. I shouldn't be snapin lines with a 1 oz lure. Also I have gotten more backlashes birdnests with this line than i have ever have with anything else. Oh well, thanks for the advice.

I never let them spool line for me I had a friend that work at a local tackle store and he told me that the line can set on the rack for months till it is used up. the problem with this line does not like light so the longer it is there the weaker it gets. If you do not ask for a name brand of line you get what ever they have the most of. if that line is less then wanted it might be older then the hills.

you do not need to go that far just make sure what you get is not been out in the light for ages and you should be safe. I buy line that been on the shelf all summer and never had a problem yet with it, but it was in a box.

Scratch, you can buy line from some of the manufacturer's, but watch what you pay for it.  Most will make the cost of the line more than if you bought it from Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, or any other retailer.  If you could buy direct from the manufacturer at a lesser price, you would not go to the retailer (hence the higher price).  Also, if the price is the same or close to the same as a retail outlet, watch the shipping price.  They may charge more to ship than a BPS or Cabela's.

Can  you  buy  line  directly  from the mfg?

BPS uses their base line to spool up reels with. It could be a number of things causing the line breakage, including the birds nest. All it takes is a small kink and the line can be compromised. It is usually more associated with flourocarbon, but can happen to mono as well. I reccomend the BPS XPS mono, or P-line Halo for flourocarbon. Be sure and check your rod eyes as well, they could be causing knicks if one is damaged.

I've had very good success with Cajun Line, IZOR line good too, and Power Pro on the braid.
