What Reels do You Have?
« on: April 01, 2009, 07:58:31 AM »

I am sure this question has been asked  before. How many spinning reels do you have?  How many casting reels?  Which do you prefer? I personally perfer spinning over casting. I have one casting reel which gets used maybe 2-3 times a year. Then I have approx. 10-12 spinning. What does everyone have???

I'm exactly opposite. 10 baitcasters and 2 spinning reels.  The spinning reels mostly get used for catfishing though  lo

3 years ago I would have said all spinning reels but since I got and understood how to work a baitcasting reel it's changed.

now I have
Baitcasters
7 Shimanos
5 Daiwas
2 Acadia
1 Pinnacle
1 Quantum
1 Abu Garcia round reel
1 BPS

Spinning
1 Shimano
2 California Tackle
4 Zelina
3 Okuma
4 shakespeare

And rarely take out the spinning reels anymore.    I searched for, found and bought a Daiwa pixy baitcaster so that I could leave the spinning reels at home.

I had to start over last may because all my tackle/rods went missing when I was away at school  ???. This is what I have replaced thus far.

Spinning:

1 Mitchell 308Xe
1 Mitchell 300Xe
1 Shimano Sahara 2500
1 Cardinal 300
1 Daiwa Precision

Casting:

1 Abu Silvermax
1 Abu Revo STX

By the end of season I would like to add a couple more Revo SX's, but with my current job situation that may not happen. I like using a casting reel most of the time, but I won't buy one unless I can get a quality one.

Last year I had 5 Shimano spinning reels:

                 2 Spirex 1000s
                 2 Spirex 2000s
                 1 Sidestab 2000

3 St Croix 6ft Med, 1 BPS Tourney 6ft MH, 1 Browning 6ft MH, 2 Shimano 5ft UL, 1 Browning 9ft Six Rivers Steelhead, Orvis BattenKill/Clearwater Fly Combo 9FT 8WT

This year I have added:

                  1 Sahara Spinning

                   2 Baitcasters
                           BPS Rick Clunn
                           Diawa Advantage (just ordered)

2 Falcons both 6'6" the herm and the cranker
1 St Croix Avid 6'2"

Im pretty sure the new casting gear will be used more from now on, I have to wait for the weather to break and get a whole day out there with it first.

Baitcasting
8 Shimano Curado (bass)
2 Shimano Cardiff (bass)
1 Shimano Chronarch (bass)
2 Shimano Corvalus (1 bass, 1 muskie)
1 Ambassaduer 5500 (muskie)
2 Ambassaduer 6500 (muskie)
1 Daiwa Millionaire 6HM (muskie)

Spinning
2 Shimano Stradic
7 Shimano Sahara
3 "No Name" Spinning reels sent for me to field test

I've got more, but this is what I just got back from cleaning/lubing and can't remember what's still out.

I would have to say that my time spent with baitcasting versus spinning is pretty equal.

5 baitcasters:

4 BPS Pro Qual
1 Quant KVD (I hate this reel)

2 spinning
both BPS Pro Qual

As you can tell I love BPS stuff.  I find that the value from a 100 BPS reel is about the same from a 200 "name brand" reel.  I had the Quantum PTi Energy and it was okay but I actually preferred the cheap BPS Extreme over the PTi. This year I upgraded all my stuff to the 09 model Pro Qual  and I LOVE THEM

After trying my first baitcaster last year I like it a lot better. But I will be using my spinning reels a lot for smaller lures and plastics and under docks till i get more confident with the baitcaster.

4 baitcasters 3 added in the last 2 months:
daiwa exceler - the only one I had last year.
daiwa magforce - have not used yet
daiwa tournament 100iL - have not used yet
shimano citica 201d - have not used yet

10 spinning reels:
daiwa xia 2500
daiwa xi 1500
abu garcia 302
3 hypercast reels 2-20s and 1-10 mostly used by the kids but I like to use them a lot.
3 cheaper daiwa ultra lights that came with $15 combos. still excellent reels.
gander mountain tournament 30 nice smooth reel but the bail hits my finger once in a while. so now it's a kids reel.

3 spincast reels not counting the 5 kids rods.
daiwa silvercast 100a I have not tried yet. mostly for the kids to use but i may use it once in a while.
cheap shakespear combo (i may try the daiwa tournament 100iL on the rod till i decide on a rod for it)
zebco 202 slingshot combo. (my first rod and reel. the 202 is being retired and has been replaced by the daiwa silvercast)

4 underspin ultralight combos.

My zebco 202 is nothing like the one my grandpa has. I tried my grandpa's 202 out once last year and it could cast a mile and was smooth. And that was with 10 year old mono as thats how long it sat in the boat house. I gave it grease and oil for the first time in its life after that and new mono. After that It almost casted as far and as smooth as my exceler. It came as a combo with a nice browning rod. I remember using it the first time I fished over 25 years ago.

I hae 3 shimano spinning reels. I use the trigger models. I hate the new anti reverse models. I close the bail manuely and have no problems with them. As for casters , I have 5 abu stx , 2 abu 5600 , 1 abu5000, and a couple of older daiwas. They all have there uses. I will be adding to the spinning line this year with the newer shimano spirex. One of the only quality trigger models still being made.

I have 8 spinning reels right now with 1 of them being about 50 years old.
mitchell 300 that was my fathers from a loooong time ago.
I have daiwa's, shimano's, and pfleugars.
I have 5 baitcasters right now ( only because I bought my first 1 about a year ago ).
quantum, shimano and abu garcia.
I think the bait monkey wants me to have a few more though. ;D
I even have a very old shakespeare spincast reel that was my grandfathers.
Still works good.

Baitcast:
Quantum KVD (08 model)
Pinnacle Solene
Daiwa Megaforce
2 Shakespeare Dimensions (really good reels for shakespeare)
Daiwa BW-II (absolutely love this reel)

Spinning
Abu Cardinal
Mitchell 308Xe

I would have to say my favorite is the Daiwa BW-II, or the pinnacle solene.

If you like the BW-II you should get your hands on the SOL and the Advantage 153 HSTA both are awesome, the HSTA is the same size as the BWII (which looks really good on a Carrot Stix!)
I didn't list my reels specifically by model but in Daiwa I have:
Pixy
Sol
153HSTA
BWII
Capricorn
Though I love the Shimanos and I have 5 Curado bantams and 1 Scorpian 1500, the Diawas are fast becoming my favorites..

I only carry 12 rods with me in the rod locker on the boat.  All baitcasters.
2- Abu Garcia Revo Premier
4- Lews Speed Spools  BB-1
4- Pflueger Trion
2- Shimano Chronarch

Have a few more in the garage but never use them any more.

Baitcasters
Abu Garcia's
3 Revo SX
1 Revo Premier
1 Black Max
2 4007LP
1 4600 C3
1 Daiwa Fuego
1 Acadia EC 7 LP
1 Shimano Citica
2 Quantum Accurist's

Spinning
1 Cardinal 504ALB
1 Shimano Sonora 2500
1 Shimano Sedona 2500

Obviously I'm a huge Revo Fan but I also like the Fuego as well as the Revo's.  I carry them all on my boat and use them on occasion. I think I'll put the Quantums on the garage sale so my wife doesn't think I have a fishing problem.
