Conservation :
A letter from the Delaware Bass Federation Conservation Director

June 24th, 2009

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control in six states including Delaware have branded the Atlantic Coast Striped Bass and Bluefish as an unhealthy food for pregnant women, those who might become pregnant and children under 6 years old. Both designations were prompted by detection of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and mercury in fish tissues.

Nanticoke Watershed Alliance

The Nanticoke Watershed Alliance is developing a crew of volunteer "Educators" to staff booths at events and festivals. They are looking for people with a friendly personality who is comfortable conversing with the pUblic. Those who join will be given background information on the organization and the Nanticoke River and will have a chance to partner up with a more experienced volunteer or staff member before being given sole responsibility of the booth. If interested contact: Kara Kukovich the Volunteer Coordinator for the Nanticoke Water Shed Alliance; karakukovich@nanticokeriver.org; Phone: 443-944-1175.

TBF National News

The TBF National Conservation Team will be coming out with a Fish Care Program for all TBF members. The program is in the approval stage right now. As soon as it gets approved it will be forwarded to the Delaware Bass Federation.

Nanticoke River

713,000 three day old American shad fry were released in the Nanticoke River to feed the Striped Bass and Largemouth Bass. The shad are an important link in the Nanticoke River and Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. Surviving fry will hang around in the river and bay until next year, then move out into the ocean, returning as spawning adults in four to six years.

Remember if there is anything that you can think of that you would like to see from your Conservation Director this year please let me know by e-mailingmeatswredden@aol.com. I will do my best to see it happen or explain why it cannot, either way you will get an answer.

Thanks, Steve Redden
