Very late last year I got a Johnny Morris Gold bait cast for 100 bucks on sale (last years). And for while I've had a problem with the tension knob. It clicks when I tighten it and loosen it, but does VERY little difference on how fast my lure falls to the ground. Does anyone know what could be wrong?  Help

Can you crank it all the way down to where the spool won't turn and drop the lure in free spool?  If you can't, it's possible that you got a defective reel.  That happened to me in the past with a Pflueger.  I couldn't get the reel to adjust to save my soul.  Took it back and got another, that one worked fine for the rest of the season.  But that was as long as it lasted, I just plain wore it out in one year.

If you can crank it down to the point where the spool won't turn, then it's just possible that you only need "micro adjustment" on the cast control.  I've got one reel that less than an 1/8th turn takes it from full lock to free spool!

Most baitcasters have a thin shim plate under the speed spool cap. Take the cap off and the shim should come out. If it has a dimple in it sometimes you can turn it over and it will work properly for a while but you will need to replace it. This happens from tightening it down to tight. I'd be willing to bet that is the problem or if you had the cap off you may have lost the shim not knowing about it.

I don't have the gold Johnny Morris but I do have 5 or 6 or the older silver ones and they all click.  It's built in so when you change lures and need to adjust you can hear how many clicks you have turned it one way or the other so if made to much adjustment or maybe not enough adjustment you can add or back off a few clicks.

As far as how fast the lure falls check your internal brakes and also check to make sure someone in the store didn't crank it down a few times and put a dimple in the disk like bass1cpr stated, if that is the case just pull the knob off and flip it over and that will get you by until you can find/buy a new disk.

Good Luck

Thanks guys,

The reel was woking fine this year. The tension knob worked fine, it tightened and loosened just as it was suppose too!  I my just send it to a reel mechanic.

This could be a "gunk" problem. Where the spool shaft rotates inside the Pinion gear can get dirty and greasy and this builds up gunk which will slow the spool down. So no matter what you do to the spool tension know the spool will only free spool so much because of this build up. A good cleaning is probably in order.
