I think someone last week was asking about spotted bass in MD?  Well here you go.  Laugh
This was caught last week in Loch Raven.  I havent seen spots like this in the reservoirs before, only the bay.  I should have turned it around because it was much more intense on the other side.

that must be a new breed of spotted bass. We could name them " Random Black Spotted Bass" rbsb for short.   Laugh

it is very common, especially in the reservoirs. those fish, in that area of the loch, are becoming rare.

I am a fisheries biologist and that fish is a largemouth bass, not a spotted bass. Spotted bass, for one, have a smaller mouth and the spots on the bellly are in perfect rows. Close but on cigar.

Looks like a nice size largemouth. Congrats

Nice sized fish! I caught one like that with the ink blots, as I describe it, back in June. I asked about it and someone gave me some answer about it being from the spawn...i kind of uned it out but now that there's a Marine Biologist amongst us...

Weedwalker...could you shed some light on these spots?   I'll post a pic of mine if you want something to see similarities if needed, don't wanna rain on Clarker2000's thread.

Those large black spots are just pigment marks as jstrozier posted. All fish have pigment and can be disrupted by injuries when young or poor water quaility. Knowing this fish was from loch raven and it being a water supply, it would probably be from an injury when it was young. Knowing that loch raven has a good population of pike and chains, it pigment pattern was dirupted early in the development. Some striped bass get this too and fisherman get them confused with Hybrids.
I got the joke but with all the exotic species of fish and aquatic organisms being added to Maryland waterways, you never can be sure.

Hope this helps,
