Was wondering if you could give advice for fishing the Ohio river?  I am new to bass fishing and am having trouble catching bass, plus it seems to get a lot of pressure.  I have read a lot about fishing lakes but am not sure it will work the same in this river.   Any help would be helpful.

OK i have fished the gallipolis pool and have had good luck finding both large and small mouth --as far as lures  i used craws and crank bait nothing out of the norm.
the river fish do put up more of a fight--just look for key spots rock wood bridge pilings  river points  lots of stuff to fish in a river

Fish the barges with a crank bait make sure you have a senko ready on a differ rod you will miss a few on a crank bait as soon as you do flip a senko you will get a good bag of Large mouths.(DT 20's)

What about islands?   I read where the points taper into deeper water are good spots, but I have never had any luck.  Plus I don't see others fishing it, so that tells me it's not worth fishing right?    The river here is 20 to 35 feet deep in the channel, do bass hang out in this deep of water?
  Thanks.

Wow. The good ole Ohio. I grew up on this beast. I have had tremendous luck on the rebel craws for smallies. Check out the connecting creeks where they run into the river. The mouths are always a great place to throw a crankbait and Carolina rig. Be sure as well to follow the creek channel out. You would be surprised out how many bass hang out on those creek channel drop off where they go into the river. Also in the winter months go around the power plants with a firetiger crankbait. The fish like it cause the water is 85 degrees in the winter months there. Bridge pilings and barges are normally a great spot as well. Just remember not all barges are as productive as others. Good luck...

Thanks guys.   So will bass be in the deep main river channel?   I ask because it seems there is no structure at all, just sand/ mud.   Most people I see fish the bank structure and nothing else, which is what I do, but I would say these fish are very pressured.  If this is where the fish are how do I catch them with so many others doing the same thing?   Sorry for the newbie questions, but it's irratating to hear how a buddy of mine can go out and catch 30 fish and I catch 3 using the same techniques.

I fished a tournament up there a couple weeks ago and I ended up second. I was catching them on Orange Crush Bandit 100 Series Cranks and flipping a sweet beaver on laydowns by current breaks. Also the guy that won it was throwin a chatterbait.
