First Round of "TOP 8 Championship" Begins!
« on: November 01, 2009, 11:24:11 PM »

The "Top 8 Championship" fish off has began! After the weather last weekend, we weren't sure if we would be able to continue the match-ups this late in the year. It turned out to be beautiful conditions in Pueblo, with temps reaching the 60's both weekend days.

The first pair of contenders went at it Saturday morning! The morning air was 37 degrees at take off and the water was 52 degrees. Five degrees colder than the weekend prior. The water warmed to 57 later in the day.

Jeanne Gizzi (2nd seed), and John Santos (7th seed), both had ambitions of moving on in the championship, but knew that this first tournament would be of utmost importance to get some good momentum towards getting their name on the traveling trophy!

Jeanne won the coin toss and elected the 2nd and 4th quarters, hoping for warmer temps to ignite the bite. John took the opportunity and went down the lake in order to use the "no start until the first cast" advantage. John caught 3 fish in about 25 minutes at this first stop and never caught another fish the rest of the day.

Jeanne used her time wisely and caught a total of 6 fish at different times throughout her quarters, putting pressure on John with every hook-set!

Unfortunately for Jeanne, John's one 15-3/4 inch Smallmouth was enough to win the match-up and end her great rookie season with the CBA! Excellent fishing from both!

Congrats to John Santos !

The match-up of the 1st place seed, Jim McCormick , and the 8th place seed, Jared Nikirk , took place Sunday morning. Sunday was to be warmer than Saturday, so we expected good catches from both contenders.

Jared, having control of the 1st and 3rd quarters, started things off with a bang! Jared boated 3 fish in the 1st quarter, with 2 of those being keepers! What a way to start putting the pressure on your opponent!

Jim, fishing as hard as a guy could fish, never could recover from the early 5lb plus weight of Jared's fish and ends up short this year in his quest to get his name on the cup! Once again, "good fishing guys!"

Congrats goes to Jared Nikirk !

Two down and two match-ups to go!

Next up....Greg Gizzi vs. Sam Heckman-----Lamont Gizzi vs. Bryan Leck
