i want to change my E7 to a 6.3:1 ratio. called Shimano and asked if it could be done. after i was on hold for a few minutes i was told no. Today I took the gears out of my 201E and put them in my E7. amazingly enough they fit. i'm wondering if anyone else has tryed this and why Shimano told me it would not work. although the reel is smooth and free spools great i'm wondering if this will work with the resistance of a lure on the end of my line. thanks in advance

If they fit there should be a problem. The only concern I would have is the outer diameter of the pinion gear versus the inner diameter of the pinion gear bearing? You'll know pretty quick if you start getting some noise.

If you hear noise then the pinion gear wasn't a good fit. It could happen either way. If the pinion gear isn't held properly then it can wobble. The plastic piece it sits in can be damaged. Then your gear will wobble when you wind and the spool shaft may wobble some when you cast.

If everything went back together snug it shouldn't be a problem, just something to watch for.

There are several swaps that you can do that the manufacturer won't tell you about. Send Dan Trorburn an email. He is a high up Shimano rep. He will give you the straight answer on if this will work or if there is any potential problems. He has given out lots of info on swaps that can be done but will also tell you that although something may work they may have found that it will wear out a part faster by doing it. His email is dthorburn@shimano.com

If I read this correctly, you switched your gears from a Citica E to a Curado E. Is this correct? If so, there is no problem doing so. You are good to go, but you have nulified the warranty if there is ever an issue in the future. This is rarely ever the case so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Why Shimano told you No is probably just the result of someone being new, or not knowing. This is in no way a secret.

The gears will fit. The gears for the new curados and citicals are interchangeable. I made my citica a 7:0 by purchasing the gear and pinion gear from shimano. I am suprised that shimano told you no. I called and asked about swapping gears and they told me it can be done. The only thing you might need to do is get a new drag washer. The 7:0 washer might be bigger. i don't remember. But you will need to switch the pinion gear as well.
