Paint comes off even powder coat from factory.

I have stored some unpainted tungstons in a plano container w/ the rest of my lead and other weights. The unpainted tungston rolled around w/ the lead and got a little moisture along the way. They are now a dull dark grey and look great. Not shiney at all. I plan on buying more tungstons from tungston by the pound and let them roll arond w/ a bunch of lead weights and a little water and see what happens.

Good nail polish will last for a few days of heavy fishing before it starts coming off.

If you want a more permant solution then use gun blueing,  Wink

What is "Tungston by the pound"? I googled it but didn't see anything to by bulk unpainted tungston weights.

I have never bought from tungsten by the pound.... So this post is not about them.

But if you buy cheaper tungsten weights I have found that the line hole is not as wide as some of your top name products. Not a big deal until you are a pegger. I like to peg my weights for heavy brush conditions and by the time you use a 17-25 pound test line there is not enough room left for a peg or insert to fit in the hole with the line  Ranting

With the cheaper tungsten, The ones with an insert, I use a bobberstop instead of a peg it strip. I have even started using them with Tru tungsten if I am out of the smart pegs, because they let the weight slide up the line away from the fish during the fight.  Wink

I started using bobber stops with all tungstons when I need a peg. I have many 1 ounce weights with a rubber peg insert stuck in them right now when the back breaks off. Not fun going through $7 weights to find one that actually works.

Yep, if your eyes are not quite what they use to be you may have trouble getting heavy braid through the hole.

Nail polish may just be the answer for now

I bought some that weren't painted. So I lined them up on some cardboard. I found out that you have to rough the weight with steel wool or emery cloth, then use a high grade primer, then a good high gloss paint.

Hint---break some tooth picks in half and put them in the hole (lightly) to keep paint from filling it up. AS SOON as you are done painting the weights, pull the tooth picks from the holes (in a twisting motion) before the paint dries. If you don't, the paint edges crack and will cause the paint to chip off prematurely.
It doesn't last forever, but I got mine to last a couple of months before the paint all chipped off.

use a hook point to get the core out. If you can't reach it I went and bought a small drill bit and keep it with my weights works great

I'll give the drill bit a try. Nothing else will get them out. Thanks for the idea.

The small blue propane torches can be used to dull the color of naked tungsten to a dull blackish color
