chime walk

 ~cf  i am on my second gambler ,, this one is a 1995 21 foot with a 1996 mariner 200 super magnum motor.with a tempest 3 blade speed prop.. i am only getting 68 mph on gps but i get a chime walk, and cant get the boat to power through it. i am turnning around 6000 to 6200 rpms.. my old gambler would gps at 72 mph, at 6400 rpms and at aroung 68 to 69 mph it would walk some but i could power through it..any ideas.. thanks tom

Hey Tom!  Welcome to UB!!   Powering through chine walk is NEVER a good Idea. You have to learn to make small correntions in steering to keep it from happening. Usually moving the sterring wheel with short choppy 1" motions as sonn as it starts will correct it.  I have heard lots of folks say to power through it but that is very dangerous. There are some video links here on the sight somewhere that show you how to correct it. I will go see if I can find them for you.

Shawn is right, never try to "power through" CHINE walk.  Steering correction is the only way to safely do it.

You should be getting better speed but more information is needed.  Things needed to know are:

Not only the name of the prop and the number of blades, but also the pitch of the prop.

Do you have a jackplate?

What is the engine setback?

How high is the engine set?  What is the distance in inches from the centerline of the prop shaft to the bottom of the pad when the propshaft is perpendicular to the pad?

What is your engine's water pressure when running at wide open throttle?

Give us this information and we can make some more educated guesses as to the problem.

My initial impression is that the motor is either set too low or too high.

I used to have the same set up.  209te with 200. 72 is gonna be in the ball park for top end.  I had to run my gambler with the moter 21/2 " below pad to make it run.  it never chined when I went above that set up only when I wend below.  Measure your shaft hight and try 21/2" below. also my best numbers were running a 26 DAH worked trophy

Steering cables could be loose or motor to deep.  I could not drive mine past 72 w any slop in cables now I have hydro steering and It never has any problem with chine walking at it will now run 79 gps with a 27 tempest.  If I drop my motor below pad more that 3 inches It walks a little but I also have a hydro JP from Bob's and a nosecone for woter pressure and to prevent blowout which I was gettin at 75-76 MPH

I have a 97 209 te with a 97 200 pro max, 10" factory gambler jackplate. I have the same problem, it'll walk like crazy, i can get about 68 sometimes but then i lose it and have to trim down or back out of it. I think i'm 2 1/2 below pad but cant remember for sure. running a txp turbo, i believe 25p, maybe 26p. it's my first fast boat so still trying to get the timing thing down with the steering, oh and it has hydraulic steering.
